Good morning! We're talking about one of the strongest natural antibiotics known to us...Garlic. Although it's most likely impossible to list everything it's good for medicinally, I think you have a good foundation. If there's something specific, please ask or as always suggested, research!

Each year this leafy green herb emerges from the forest in the US ranges from South Carolina up to Canada, west to Missouri and Minnesota more along the east coast. Late May would be getting towards the tail end of wild garlic season, so early April you can find those who pick wild garlic filling their foraging baskets with tender edible leaves that are so yummy in so many dishes. They're prolific so there isn't any fear of over- picking.

Wild garlic will taste like a mild garlic with a pleasant aroma. It grows in moist, boggy places around waterways. The leaves, bulbs and flowers can be used and you'll know it by its garlic scent that fills the area. Best time to pick wild garlic is when the leaves are new but before it flowers. You can pick it after but the leaves won't be as tender.

We will stop here. Thanks for all of your comments and remember to have a groovy day!

Good morning! We're shifting to one of the most amazing medicinal herbs .... Garlic (cloves, root). Personally, this has assisted my health since I was a child. My father had extremely high blood pressure and my mother, being Italian, switched from using any salt to only garlic with any cooking. Since I have lived on my own, I've used garlic medicinally. It has saved me from many doctors and dentists.

Garlic has been used all over the world in cooking, but it has very strong medicinal purposes. The compounds isolated from garlic have been shown to have antimicrobial, cardioprotective, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties also may play a role in the belief that garlic helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure. ***Garlic can increase the risk of bleeding and should not be used with warfarin, a blood thinner.

Garlic is highly nutritious and one clove of raw garlic contains magnese, vitamin B6, vitamin C, selenium, fiber and decent amounts of calcium, copper, potassium, phosphorus, iron and vitamin B1. It in fact has almost everything you need.

We use garlic when we feel a cold or flu coming on, for any kind of infection as it's known as nature's antibiotic. It's known to combat sickness.

Garlic contains antioxidants that may help prevent Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia. High doses of garlic have been shown to increase antioxidant enzymes in humans, as well as reduce oxidative stress in those with high blood pressure. The combined effects on reducing cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as the antioxidant properties, reduce the risk of common brain diseases like Alzheimers and dementia.

I think we will stop here for today with this quote as it feels so appropriate- "Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food." - Hippocrates

Welcome to our new folks and remember to have a groovy day!

Good morning! We just want to finish up with harvesting St. John's wort. As suggested earlier, this plant is best harvested and used when it's in full bloom and still fresh, but it is ok if some of the flowers have dried a bit on the stalk.

To harvest, cut the top 2-3 inches off the plant to get some leaves, flowers and buds, as they all have some benefits.

One of the things you want to be aware of if you're foraging this plant because of the fact that it often grows in places that might not be ideal for foraging, (roadsides in particular), be sure to harvest in an area that's free of sprays and road runoff.

You can use the same ideas for drying and store in a glass jar preferably in a cool storage area.

You can cap this herb, make tinctures, salves and infused oil.

***Due to its powerful effects on depression, St. John's wort should not be taken with prescription antidepressants.

When taking this herb internally, it's best to cycle 2-3 weeks on, one week off to get the most benefit.

Again, consult your doctor, naturopath, or a trained clinical herbalist.

Thanks for joining us and remember to have a groovy day!
