Anna Clyne’s multi-piece work ‘The Violin’ celebrates collaboration! Violin lessons were bartered for the commission and composition lessons for the rehabilitation of an antique instrument; also, animated short films were created to accompany the music and poetry by the composer’s mother is heard during several of the pieces. This work’s creation is a product of the weaving together of peoples’ lives, while the beautifully entwined music of the two soloists is interlaced with spoken word and visual meditation.

Hear ‘Tea Leaves’ below performed by dedicatees Amy Kauffman and Cornelius Dufallo, with stop-motion animation by Josh Dorman. Then come out hear it live on our Warp and Woof concert, January 5th, in Socorro.

Thrilled once again to present music by Polish-Soviet musician Mieczyslaw Weinberg! Full of exciting and delicate virtuosity, he wrote the sonata for two violins for imminent soloists Leonid Kogan and Elizabeth Gilels, sister of pianist Emil Gilels. Weinberg meets the contrapuntal challenge of weaving together two full-throated equals with a tapestry rich in detail, invention, charm, and expressive immediacy. Even as Weinberg’s star rises beyond Russian borders, this work is rare to hear in performance.

Listen at the link below to the third movement, as performed by Elena Prokhorova and Alexander Trostjanskij. Then, come hear it live on our Warp and Woof concert, January 5th, at 2:00pm in Socorro.

By the hand of Isang Yun, traditional Korean musical technique flourishes as an instrument of the Western avant-garde. A nearly mystical golden thread runs through his Sonatina, a masterfully intimate web woven of tradition and innovation, simplicity and ornament. Hear the opening performed by sisters Angela and Jennifer Chun, below, and hear it live at our concert: Warp and Woof on January 5th.
