Tonight is the night. I welcome all my loved ones as many others around the world are doing now.
I want to thank everyone around me while I was completing this project. Thank you to my parents who helped me diy this entire altar from the maize to the flowers. To my friends and family, I would have never accomplished this without them. It took over a year to complete, up until the last second before the show opened. Many tears were involved but I couldn’t be more proud of us. Thank you for helping me bring such a beautiful tradition to the professional art world.
I will be celebrating tonight with a smaller scale version of this altar at home. The candles are on as we wait for my family and pets to come back. Have a good night 🤍

Bodegón: Autorretrato
Spring 2023 (NCECA posts coming!!!)

Welcome to my home, Make it your own.
Please feel free to rearrange the objects to your liking.
As a Mexican artist living in America, I bestride two different cultures. In my view, I am always facing a constant dilemma. My parents raised me traditionally, and as a first generation American, my art exposure did not come from them. The elegance and beauty portrayed within fancy European ceramics or beautiful fine China was what I was familiar with, drawn to, and unconsciously considered as the standard of beauty. The ceramics from my Mexican culture were looked down upon, by my schooling, my family, and, after reflecting, even myself, to an extent.
Stylistically, the “still life” is primarily connected to painting. My artwork and still life paintings both depict common and inanimate objects. Now, removed from the canvas, I celebrate my love for functional and ordinary objects: a moment stuck in time, a remnant of a movement, a window into life. This still life installation connects all the worlds I appreciate. While paying homage to my Mexican heritage, I try to answer my life long questions: What do Mexican ceramics and forms look like? How can I make it my own? Can my influences coexist in my work as they do within me?
Welcome to my home, in which you and I explore the spaces where my pottery lives, cohesive or not.

El Encubrimiento

Aztlán,
Before the Colonizers.
Deserted.
Evacuated,
For our God Huitzilopochtli,
In a Journey to Kingdom.
Located.
Moctezuma and la Malinche.
Nullified.
Overpowered.

Past.
Quilting Remnants and Stories,
To Uncover the Vile.
Wailing.
reconnecting with Xolotl,
Yearning.
Zazo quen nel

This installation was an homage and an attack to my ancestry. The Spanish and Indigenous blood and history I cannot stay naïve to. Recreations of Moctezuma’s headdress using the feathers my macaw sheds. Sculptures and forms inspired from both cultures. As Zazo quen nel - that’s the way it is, it cannot be any another way, no matter how much we’d like our history to be different.
