This isn’t my normal kind of post. But I feel I need to address this.
I’ve been sitting with the news of Teachers Pay Teachers policy changes and reading everyone’s reactions. For those that don’t know- there is a mass exodus happening.
TPT has been THE place to share affordable lesson plans for decades now. This surprise change is drastic and unfair- essentially forcing creators to sign up for an “Exclusive” level plan that takes away their ability to sell their creations anywhere else, even their own websites. If they don’t choose this new plan, the base level plan will take a 45% cut, plus .30/transaction.
When lessons are often only a few dollars- creators are left with very little. The new Exclusive Seller level is replacing the Premium Seller option, but taking an addition 2.5% cut (now 22.5%) and revoking the right to sell anywhere else. The only thing staying the same is the annual fee.
As for many, none of this sits right with me. Teachers are natural givers. This whole thing feels like one more way teachers are being taken advantage of. Lessons take great care, expertise and an incredible amount of time to put together. It should be the intellectual property of the creator, not the platform.
I have only recently started with TPT a couple years ago. It’s been great up until now. So many teachers and families looking for art resources have found me there. IF I stay on their platform, I will be keeping my autonomy and taking the financial hit.
Please consider buying directly from my website instead. Please find your favorite TPT creators and buy directly from their websites or Etsy pages if they have them.
