For the last couple of weeks the 10 & Up and Tween Studio classes have been learning about the Art Nouveau movement, its place in history, why it stands the test of time (hello Tiffany lamps, poster art and tattoo designs!). We studied artists Alphonse Mucha and Toulouse Lautrec before either choosing to do a master copy or using reference material to come up with ideas for a new design.

These are examples from the 10 & Up classes. I’ll make another post for the Tween class after I edit those photos.

It’s all about that ☀️GLOW☀️

These positively stunning sunsets were painted in gouache by the 10 & Up and Tween Studio classes.

What we love about gouache is that it falls somewhere between the transparency of watercolor, and the opacity of acrylic paint. With more water it can have watercolor effects, with less it has great coverage. And unlike watercolor- it’s fairly forgiving!

Primary Studio students painted these busy little honeybees after designing their geometric honeycomb patterns and learning about bee anatomy. Super proud of them, as this was a challenging, multi layered project!

Small class today, but the perfect size for setting up a collaborative still life.

Over spring break I had the pleasure of being a student myself, and took a Dutch Master’s inspired floral workshop at .creative (my arrangement in the last pic).

Today there were still a few blooms left and worth capturing, so we did a short art history overview and looked at examples of Dutch Master still life paintings before arranging a backdrop and adding in some fake filler flowers. One of my students is a writer who loves Greek mythology and I just happen to have some mythology books from the 1800’s that made perfect props for today’s still life!

I loved having their input with the arrangement and seeing what they chose to include and what they chose to leave out of their creations.

They used chalk pastel and nupastels on black pastel paper for these masterpieces. I love how moody they are!

☀️We have 1 spot open for another friend to join art camp the week of July 13-16 ☀️ And through April 30 it still qualifies for an Early Bird Discount!

If you didn’t get a spot and a different week works better- make sure to fill out the waitlist form. Often there is some movement as the days and weeks get closer to summer, and you never know what might open up 😎

For ages 6-12. More info on the website.

Happy Sunday, and Happy Easter for those who celebrate 🐰🐥 Enjoy this creative collection of bunny art from all 3 different class levels from this past month. There’s a bit of everything from scratch art to watercolor to colored pencil- an eclectic mix of mediums and styles 🥰

The studio is officially on Spring Break this coming week~ but you can still sign up for classes through the website! The sessions that began last week have been prorated, and the others start up after this week. This is a great time to jump into a class- only 2 1/2 months left until we break for summer, and anyone in classes at the end of the year can automatically reserve their same spot for September classes.

In addition to my TPT lessons, I also have a Teachable account where I have over a dozen step-by-step video lessons (there’s a link in my bio as well as on my website). I made these during the pandemic when parents were needing to teach at home and my studio had to close for a while. Truly anyone can use these to teach- you do not need to be an artist!

Feeling Daffy was designed for elementary aged kids and up, and includes:

🌼 instant access
🌼 6 self paced videos (total of 50 mins of guided instruction)
🌼 traceable line drawing if needed
🌼 color theory slideshow
🌼 glossary of art terms

If you want to feel like you’re painting with me in my studio, these video lessons are what you’re looking for 😄

Some graphite drawings by the 10 & Up Studio students. These were all created from working from photo reference. This age group loves working in more detail, and their observational skills really come into play with this type of work. The used a variety of pencils in different values, as well as some graphite power for some of the ones with a softer, almost charcoal like look to them.

Happy St Patrick’s Day 🌈🍀🍀🍀

These vibrant landscapes were created by the Primary Studio group yesterday, just in time for the holiday! We learned about creating a rainbow that looks more realistic than the kind they are used to seeing in cartoons or printed on stickers etc. Less “cut out” looking and more blended and soft.

We looks at pictures of real rainbows before making our own, and had a brief review of one point perspective to line up our rows of for the tulip field.

Probably my favorite rainbow lesson to date! I love the moody blue skies against the bright colors everywhere else 😍
