I was fighting sleep to get these pics of the Lunar eclipse this morning 😭🌕
Here are some quick facts:

Entire Eclipse:
1:09-4:47am

Totality
2:26-3:31am

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, causing the Earth’s shadow to completely cover the Moon. This happens only during a full moon and when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are perfectly aligned.

During the eclipse, sunlight passing through Earth’s atmosphere scatters, filtering out shorter wavelengths (like blue and green) and allowing the longer, red wavelengths to reach the Moon. This gives the Moon a reddish color, often called a “Blood Moon”. Unlike solar eclipses, they are safe to view with the naked eye/lens.

It took 2 weeks of planning and 2 whole days of traveling just to experience this 4 minute astronomical event in its truest form! ☀️🌖
I traveled to Carbondale, Illinois so I could experience the max duration of totality since this city was located in the epicenter of the lunar shadow!
So for context:
The first picture is during totality where the moon completely covers the face of the sun, which gives you a better view of the sun’s beautiful Corona. I had to scramble and take off the camera’s sun filter since this phase of the eclipse is completely safe for your bare eyes and camera to view! I had to do something editing to even barely see any moon features!

The second picture is what people call the “diamond ring” effect! It happens right before and right after totality. This one is from afterwards. Right when sunlight starts to peak around the moon’s rugged surface, it shines to create this spectacular diamond ring shape! It only lasts a few seconds so you have to be quick! I did not take this with my filter but quickly put it on afterwards to protect my camera sensor!

The third picture is almost halfway before totality! What excited me about this one is that if you look closely you can actually see a few sunspots which I’ve never seen in person before! Sunspots are temporary spots on the sun’s surface that are darker than the surrounding areas. They have reduced surface temperature and are caused by drastic differences in the sun’s magnetic fields!
