📍 John Peters House • Gunwaleford Road, Lauderdale County
On a quiet hill sits a small walled cemetery. It is the last visible remnant of what was once the largest plantation in Lauderdale County. Historical records show that 313 enslaved people lived and labored here, yet the only marked graves that remain belong to the family who owned the land.
The house is gone. The outbuildings are gone. The fields have changed. What remains is this small enclosure that represents only a fraction of the people whose lives were bound to this place.
There is often debate about monuments and whether moving them erases history, but standing here raises a different question. What does it mean when hundreds of lives that shaped a place leave behind no markers at all?
