Martha Gault Art Gallery Proudly presents: A Call for SRU Student Art
SRU x SAGA Visual Art and Creative Writing Exchange
“Chaos and Order: Inspired by the ‘Conditional Play’ of Surrealist Games”
Exhibition Project at SRU University Gallery (September 2026) and Saga University Museum of Art (May 2027)
An exhibition featuring creative literature and visual arts from SRU University and volunteer students from the Faculty of Arts at Saga University, Saga, Japan.
SRU Art students are invited to submit artworks on the theme of “Chaos and Order.”
If your artwork is selected, it will be paired by Faculty with selected written works.
Students from both universities will create works in written or visual form on the theme of “Chaos and Order.” Faculty members from the planning teams at both universities will select the submitted works and pair them with written and visual expressions. The exhibition will tour to the SRU University Gallery (September 2026) and the Saga University Museum of Art (May 2027). A catalog will also be produced in conjunction with the exhibition.
Purpose:
Generally, in poetry and illustration collections, the poems come first, and the illustrations are created later. The same might be true for picture books. On the other hand, in Surrealist "conditional play," "if...then" and "...would be" are presented simultaneously by multiple participants. This "conditional play" shakes our causal mode of thinking and opens up the experience of accidental meaning generation. With this Surrealist play in mind, this project aims for artistic exchange and dialogue between the two universities to be open to "never-before-seen" visions and meaning generation, without falling into predetermined harmony or master-servant relationships.
