Our Summer Lunch Program was a great success, thanks to many! Since 2015, students in need in the northern part of Slippery Rock Area School District have been provided with food during summer vacation months. Sponsored and coordinated by our food cupboard, over the years the program has evolved and been supported by various partnering organizations and local businesses. This year, longtime coordinators Sylvia Walters and Susan Tenace transitioned the responsibility for the program to Stacy Croll and a team of experienced volunteers. This is the first of two posts appreciating all who have contributed to this year’s program, starting with these businesses and organizations who supported through donations or discounts on purchases:
• At Domino’s Pizza in Slippery Rock, Rob, Ken, and their employees arrived early on Mondays to fill our weekly pizza orders.
• Simplified Meals by Ginger went above and beyond to provide several ready-to-eat meals for local children every week at a discounted price.
• Slippery Rock’s Giant Eagle has continued their support each year through discounts and donations.
• Trinity Community Church in Harrisville created and donated back-to-school bags for elementary school students, as the program ended and the school year begins.
***On behalf of our children and their families, we much appreciate the generosity of these community entities!***

Our Summer lunch program volunteers are the best!
It takes a community to provide meals for our community’s children while school is out for the summer. This year we had a dedicated team of coordinators and individuals whose roles include planning, organizing, shopping for and picking up food items, packing boxes for the families, and making deliveries. Our much-appreciated volunteers included: Sylvia Walters, Susan Tenace, Stacy Croll, Tracey Allison, Martha Campbell, Dale Doran, Jim Green, Shirley Jones, Pat Loudon, Becky Lubold, Janice Stanley, Dee Thompson, Sandy Wakefield, and Amy Wallace. (Although we couldn’t seem to get them all together at one time for a single photo, we are deeply grateful for their contributions to another year of our very successful summer efforts!

It’s that time of year…for plentiful, fresh, local produce! Here at the food cupboard, we’ve been gratefully receiving donations from local growers and gardeners who find themselves with more than they can use. Do you have an over-abundance of zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, beans, or other garden goodies that you want to share? We welcome these donations on Tuesdays and Thursdays when we are open for distribution, from 2:00 – 3:00 PM. (There are usually folks present and preparing to open as early as 1:00.) We offer special thanks to Trail Head Croft farm, a regular donor, as well as to others who, although they don’t often give their names, have been showing up at our door with their surplus.

Sandy is one of our longest-serving volunteers. She packs special bags of snacks and treats for children, and portions out dog and cat food for pets. She especially likes to help clients choose the foods they want and need. The fact that Feed My Sheep Food Cupboard has been involved with so many people in the community, even during the time of the Covid pandemic, is what impresses Sandy; and she is proud to be helping.

Wanting to help members of our community in need, Robyn began volunteering at Feed My Sheep four years ago, after retiring from her former job. At the food cupboard, she assists clients in choosing the foods they want, restocks products, and makes some deliveries. She especially enjoys talking to and getting to know folks, as they pick out the items they would like. Often somewhat quiet, but a friendly and capable helper, Robyn is a wonderful and appreciated member of our volunteer team!

Pat has been a volunteer at Feed My Sheep for three years, after having moved from Michigan, where she had previous food cupboard experience. Here in Slippery Rock, she helps stock our shelves and assists clients as they pick out foods and other items they want. Favorite aspects of her experience here include meeting and working with other volunteers. Making new acquaintances among the helpers and guests has made her feel like a part of the community. Pat notes that she appreciates all of the work people do, a lot of it done behind the scenes and not highly visible, which benefits so many people!
