👧 From the Pages of Sleepy Eye History — Little Kathleen’s Big Adventure

In December of 1949, the family of Sleepy Eye Mayor Joe Piehl had quite a scare during a shopping trip to downtown St. Paul.

Joe and Mrs. Piehl were visiting a department store with their children — Barbara, 12; Frances, 10; Kathleen, 3; and Jerry, 5. With the store crowded for the Christmas season, the family became separated for a few minutes.

When Mrs. Piehl caught up with her husband, she asked the question no parent ever wants to hear:

“Where’s Kathleen?”

Joe thought the three-year-old was with his wife. She thought Kathleen was with him.

Suddenly, their shopping trip turned into a frantic search.

The Piehls began asking store clerks if anyone had seen a little girl matching Kathleen’s description. No one had. Then someone suggested they contact the police.

That turned out to be the right idea.

There was little Kathleen — perfectly safe — sitting on the knee of a big St. Paul police officer.

Her mother had tears in her eyes, but Kathleen apparently had a completely different opinion of what had happened. While everyone else had been worried sick, she had been having what she considered a wonderful adventure.

Trying to explain her experience riding an escalator, Kathleen proudly told her family:

“I had a lot of fun. I had a ride on the ‘alligator.’”

What a wonderful ending to what must have been a terrifying few minutes for her parents.

You can almost picture three-year-old Kathleen wandering through that busy St. Paul department store during the Christmas season, fascinated by the lights, people and that mysterious moving staircase she called an “alligator.”

Nearly 77 years later, this little newspaper story still brings a smile.

Sometimes the best pieces of history aren’t about wars, fires, crimes or major events. Sometimes they are simply about a little girl from Sleepy Eye who got lost in a department store — and ended up having the adventure of her young life.

Does anyone remember Kathleen Piehl or the Piehl family?

Another wonderful memory from the pages of the Sleepy Eye Herald-Dispatch, December 8, 1949.

There are some houses you walk past without giving them a second thought.

And then there are houses that make you stop.

You’re not sure why.

Maybe it’s the peeling paint. Maybe it’s the dark windows. Or maybe it’s that strange feeling that someone—or something—is watching you from inside.

This old house looks different after the sun goes down.

During the day, it might simply look abandoned and forgotten. But at night, when the streets grow quiet and the shadows stretch across the walls, your imagination begins to work.

You look toward that upstairs window.

Was that movement?

You look again.

Nothing.

Then you hear a creak.

Old house settling?

Probably.

At least, that’s what you tell yourself.

For more than 20 years, I have been taking people on Ghost Tours of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, sharing the darker stories, strange happenings, local legends, crimes, tragedies, and mysteries that have become part of our community’s past.

Some stories can be explained.

Others leave you wondering.

And sometimes the scariest part of a ghost tour isn’t what you see…

It’s what you think you saw.

Where History, Mystery and the Unexplained Meet

What exactly is a Ghost Tour?

Some people hear those words and immediately think it is a haunted house with people jumping from behind walls trying to scare you.

That isn’t what we do.

A Ghost Tour is a journey into the past.

It is a guided adventure through actual locations connected to local history, mysterious happenings, tragedies, crimes, deaths, legends and stories of the unexplained.

And here in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, we certainly have plenty of stories to tell.

For more than 150 years, people have lived, worked, celebrated, struggled and died in our community. Behind some of our familiar buildings and quiet streets are stories that many people have simply forgotten.

There are old buildings with mysterious pasts.

There are stories of tragic deaths.

Unsolved crimes.

Strange happenings.

Local legends.

Cemetery stories.

And, yes, there are places where people over the years have claimed to have experienced things they simply couldn’t explain.

That is where the fun begins.

As your guide, I don’t need to convince you that ghosts exist.

You get to decide that for yourself.

My job is to take you into Sleepy Eye’s past and tell you the stories.

Some will make you laugh.

Some will make you think.

Some may make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

And every once in a while, one might give you a little thrill and chill when you least expect it.

That is what makes Ghost Tours of Sleepy Eye Minnesota different.

We combine history, mystery, folklore, suspense and storytelling while visiting places where the stories actually happened.

You may have driven past some of these locations hundreds of times without ever knowing what happened there decades ago.

Then you hear the story.

Suddenly that familiar old building looks just a little different.

That dark window seems a little darker.

That quiet street doesn’t seem quite as quiet.

And when you walk through a historic building at night knowing what happened there long ago…

Well…

Sometimes your imagination does the rest.

Whether you are a believer, a skeptic, a history lover or simply looking for something different to do, you are welcome on my Ghost Tours.

Come hear the stories.

Come explore the history.

Come experience a few thrills and chills.

And when the tour is over, you can decide for yourself…

Is it simply history?

Is it an old legend?

Or could something from Sleepy Eye’s past still be hanging around? 👻

Welcome to Ghost Tours of Sleepy Eye Minnesota.

Where the past is never very far away.
