What a wonderful close to Alaska Airlines Autumn Classics in Anchorage. This afternoon at UAA Recital Hall, Zuill Bailey and the Ulysses Quartet brought the series home with Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in E-flat, Op. 12; Danish String Quartet folk arrangements; Max Richter’s On the Nature of Daylight; Waltzing Matilda; and Beethoven’s Kreutzer Quintet. Then we gathered with our Director’s Circle.

Wonderful day of school visits in Wasilla before tonight’s 7 p.m. concert.
We began at Joe Redington Senior Jr/Sr High School with Sitka’s own Heather Gluth and one of her band classes (Heather previously taught music at Mt. Edgecumbe High School), then visited Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School.
Students met Grammy Award-winning Artistic Director Zuill Bailey on cello and learned about listening, musical history, and how to practice.

What a wonderful first two days in Anchorage! 🎻

Friday brought Dutilleux, Vaughan Williams and the Brahms Double with Zuill Bailey, Yuriy Bekker and Dominic Dousa. Saturday ranged from Mozart and Korngold to Copland and the great Elgar Cello Concerto — plus a free open rehearsal that morning.

Today, the Ulysses Quartet joins Zuill and Dominic for the Alaska premiere of Visions of Humanity and Unity, co-commissioned by the Sitka Music Festival: five composers — Chapela, Dancy, Dorman, O’Connor and Zhou Tian — each writing a movement on their own heritage and America at 250, dedicated to Zuill Bailey. Bernstein, Joplin and more round out the afternoon.

4 p.m., UAA Recital Hall. Tickets at sitkamusicfestival.org 🔗 in bio

What a day in Sitka.
Festival artists spent time with students at Mt. Edgecumbe High School, Sitka High School, and Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary School, then visited residents at the Sitka Pioneer Home.
Last night those same artists filled Miner Music Center with Dutilleux, Korngold, and Copland, then Yuriy Bekker, Zuill Bailey, and Dominic Dousa closed with Brahms’s Double Concerto in A minor.
Thank you to the schools, the Pioneer Home, our artists, and everyone who showed up for both the visits and the concert. Zuill Bailey Yuriy Bekker Dominic Dousa
