Founded by author and Augustana College (now Augustana University) English Professor Herbert Krause, the Center for Western Studies (CWS) is a museum, art gallery, and book publisher dedicated to improving the quality of social and cultural life in the Northern Plains. The Center is also a reposito

ry for over 500 substantive archival and manuscript collections and a 36,000-volume library which are available for public research. Located on the campus of Augustana University, CWS sponsors annual events such as the Boe Forum, the Dakota Conference, and the Artists of the Plains Art Show and Sale.

Tonight’s the night! Join us for “250 Years Later: Indigenous Reflections on America” a talk with Ihanktonwan artist Jerry Fogg.

As the nation marks 250 years, join Ihanktonwan artist Jerry Fogg for an evening of conversations and reflection on the enduring histories, resilience, and perspectives of Indigenous peoples.

Tonights event will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Center for Western Studies and is free and open to the public.

This 1932 book relates the story of Black Elk, an Oglala Lakota medicine man who had survived the Wounded Knee Massacre. He spoke in Lakota to Nebraska writer John G. Neihardt, and his son translated to English. A 2008 edition is annotated by Lakota scholar Raymond DeMallie. The White River, a major tributary of the Missouri River, rides the northern border of the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
