How does the Sennheiser MKH 8030 fit on top of a Sanken CO-100K? Well, have a look!

It fits nicely, doesn’t feel too heavy, and with the two clips, the whole setup can be balanced quite well!

I didn’t want to remove the wind protection just to try it out, but I’m pretty sure I can figure out a way to either fit both microphones inside the existing windshield or find another solution to align them.

And I have to say, the MKH 8030 sounded really nice!

A big thank you to Stan for having us and letting us try it out his 8030! We would have bought one on the spot, but unfortunately, it wasn’t available. So we’ll have to wait until we’re in Germany.

Now, a little side story from today. 😂

After lunch, Stan kindly offered to drop us off at the train station for our train to Riga.

Everything was going smoothly until I realized I’d forgotten my glasses at the shop. So we turned around, drove back, picked them up, and headed to the train station again.

Stan dropped us off, we said see you later, and we got on the train.

And then, suddenly…

Wait a minute.

WHERE IS THE BAG WITH ALL OUR RECORDING GEAR?!

IN STAN’S CAR!!! 😂

I still can’t believe it! After going back for my glasses, I somehow managed to leave the bag with all our equipment in his car!

We had less than 15 minutes before the train was scheduled to leave, so we immediately called Stan.

Luckily, he answered the phone, turned around, and managed to bring the bag back just in time!

What a day! 😂

A microphone test, two forgotten things, an unexpected race against the clock, and a very happy ending!

Thank you again, Stanislav Vladimirovich! We definitely won’t forget this visit anytime soon!

Question for the professional sound engineers/designers and field recordists out there!

I’ve been using the Sanken CO-100K for almost three weeks now, and I absolutely love it!

Now I’m thinking about adding a stereo option by mounting another microphone directly above it with a clamp.

Would you go with a Sennheiser MKH 8030 (figure-8) for an M/S setup, or would you choose the Sanken CMS-50 instead?

Curious to hear your thoughts, especially if you’ve experimented with either setup!

Our last sounds and locations from Finland! 🇫🇮🍂

Three weeks went by in a flash, and we had such a wonderful time exploring a small part of Finland.

This time, we decided to travel a little differently. Instead of driving for hours from one place to the next, trying to see as much as possible, we chose to slow things down. We stayed in hotels or apartments for at least three nights and explored the surrounding areas with shorter day trips.

And honestly, it worked out perfectly!

It gave us the freedom to spend more time in places we enjoyed, discover things we hadn’t planned for, and just take our time recording without constantly thinking about where we needed to be next.

Of course, there’s still so much of Finland we haven’t seen, but that’s perfectly fine. We never intended to see it all in three weeks anyway.

Autumn in the Nordic countries is something special, and we’ve already decided that we’ll be back next year!

But for now, we’ve moved on to our next adventure. We took the ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn, spent three nights exploring the city, and today we picked up another rental car to continue our journey through Estonia.

New places, new sounds, and plenty more to discover!

During our trip through Finland, we stopped in the beautiful little coastal town of Ekenäs.

I can only imagine how different this place must feel in the middle of summer, when the streets are full of visitors, the harbor is busy, and everyone is out enjoying the long summer days.

But we got to experience a completely different side of it.

It’s autumn. The summer crowds were long gone, the pace of life had slowed down, and there were just a few travelers and locals going about their day.

And that’s something I’ve really come to appreciate about traveling outside the main season. You get to experience places when they’re not trying to accommodate hundreds of visitors. When everyday life takes over again, and even the smallest sounds have room to be heard.

We spent some time by the water, recording the gentle movement of a boat, the soft splashing against its hull, and the quiet atmosphere of the harbor.

Nothing spectacular was happening. And maybe that’s exactly what made it so beautiful.

This is what it looks like when recording footsteps with the Sanken CO-100K! Almost everything is red, all the way up to the frequency ceiling!

I’m currently editing these recordings for an upcoming sound library, and walking on dry, crunchy autumn leaves definitely generates some serious ultrasonic frequencies!

I might even have this library ready by tonight and upload it to Bandcamp! 🍂🎙️

Still using our hydrophone! Not all the time, but whenever we need it, we have it with us. For traveling, we use the Ambient ASF2 MK2.

The weather just keeps getting better here in Finland! 🍂☀️

Last year around this time, we went on a road trip through Japan, and we knew immediately that we wanted to experience the breathtaking autumn season. We arrived a little too early to see the leaves really changing colors, but here in Finland, the timing couldn’t be better.

The autumn colors are beautiful, and somehow we’ve been lucky enough to have the sun out too! 🍁

I gotta say, even the original slow-motion audio from the iPhone sounded really good! So if you have an iPhone, put it on 240 fps, record something and listen back to it.

Our time in Finland is slowly coming to an end, and soon we’re taking the ferry to Tallinn.

Three weeks is of course nowhere near enough, but we really enjoyed our time here. In another post, we’ll share some of our thoughts about traveling through Finland in autumn. 🍂
