A Place to Rest: The Encaustic Art of Sandra Alderman

Finding Calm Through Art
Welcome to "A Place to Rest," an exhibition showcasing the evocative encaustic art of Sandra Alderman. This collection features works in soothing tones, crafted to offer viewers a peaceful retreat from the demands and noise of daily life. Sandra’s creative process is deeply immersive—she describes it as, “I heat up my beeswax, fire up my torch and go to another world where I can find calm.” Through her layered techniques, she invites you to pause, breathe, and discover moments of tranquility within each piece.
The ancient art of encaustic painting traces its roots back to the 5th century BC, when Greek artists first experimented with melted beeswax mixed with pigments. This versatile medium was originally used to decorate warships, funerary portraits, and architectural features, prized for its durability and luminous quality. Today, encaustic remains a fascinating technique, allowing for a unique blend of texture, depth, and transparency.
In Sandra Alderman’s work, encaustic serves as a foundation for artistic exploration. She incorporates a wide variety of materials into her compositions—such as natural fibers, textiles, papers, and found objects—demonstrating the remarkable adaptability of the medium. Each artwork is a testament to both tradition and innovation, merging ancient methods with contemporary creativity. The result is a rich tapestry of visual and tactile experiences, inviting viewers to engage not just with the imagery, but with the very substance of the art itself.
We hope that as you explore "A Place to Rest," you discover your own sense of calm and wonder, inspired by the enduring beauty and versatility of encaustic art.
