INYFW Look 10: No Lie Can Live Forever 🦅

Throughout this collection, I explored the mythology of cowboy culture. The stories that were taught, the stories that were erased, and the stories that continue to shape how we see ourselves.

I’m fascinated with the grit, the independence, and the confidence that have become synonymous with the image of the cowboy. Each piece was meant to be a stand alone while contributing to the larger story.

I drew inspiration from Stagecoach Mary, Jackson Sundown, Bass Reeves, and others so I wanted to loosely share that visual through some of the details but in a contemporary way.

This final piece is meant to be a reflection of contradiction; history and erasure, resistance and reclamation, and so much more.

INYFW Look 8: Billy Jack 💥 The focus of this look was the Jackson Sundown Handbag so I upcycled a denim jacket by adding matching beadwork to the front and the back and paired it with a hat band and pony bead necklace.

Jackson Sundown, or wana’tón’cickanin’, was from the Wal’waáma Band of the nimîipuu nation and was the nephew of Chief Joseph. In 1916, at the age of 53, he became the world champion Bronc rider at the Pendleton Round Up in Pendleton, Oregon.

INYFW Look 6: Nimíipuu Wall Canvas 🖼️

I made this design in 2021 and it’s still one of my favorites. I wanted to go with a solid geometric pattern utilizing some of the common colors my people traded during the boom beads.

Since then, I’ve had the privilege of sharing it with Potlatch Fund and Eighth Generation for their “Prosperity Wool Blanket”. Available at eighthgeneration.com

INYFW Look 5: waláaytic Wife • This was the first piece I started and the last piece I finished. I knew what I wanted so once I received my acceptance into the show, I had no excuses but to get it done. ✍🏽

The bullet casings came from me and my siblings. We hit the back roads on our rez one day to shoot a few rounds and when we were done, we got the idea for this bag.

I paired the casings with vintage bells, brass and czech beads, true cuts, two types of deer hide and backed some Teton cloth.

To bring the look together, I included a necklace made with antique beads (from my grandmothers collection 😌), brass, and bone inspired beads. Along with pink conch earrings.
