As we begin to see the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, we indulge in travel dreams. Essoyes, in Champagne, is the village where the Renoir family spent many happy summers.

In 1420, in the middle of the Hundred Years War, the Treaty of Troyes was signed, and shortly afterward King Henry V of England married Catherine of Valois, thus becoming heir to two crowns, that of England and of France. To commemorate these important events in the history of Troyes, the prefecture of l'Aube is presenting an exhibition, "One King for Two Crowns," which began on Friday, September 4, and continues through January 3, 2021. All exhibition panels are in both English and French, and I for one hope to see this exhibition. (Note to those who don't care at all about kings: if you have any interest in Joan of Arc you may want to find out how SHE became involved in the history of Troyes as well. :-)

This is the kind of place Essoyes is. A young woman who grew up here and now works in Troyes has used her own money to buy the materials, and her own free time to sew these masks, one for each of the children in the local elementary school, so they will have masks when they return to school on Monday. I can't even say how touched I am by her kindness, and unselfishness...but also...honestly, it is not that unusual to find such generosity here in this little town...it is all around us...

Un immense merci à une jeune fille, originaire du village, partie travailler à Troyes, qui , pendant ses pauses, a cousu ces masques pour les enfants du groupe scolaire.
Elle ne souhaite pas que je dise qui elle est...
Elle est allée acheter du tissu et des élastiques pour pouvoir effectuer ce geste si généreux.
Je les fais passer dès lundi à l’association des parents d’élèves.
Bravo à toi et merci pour les enfants 🤩

"Translation, les collections du musée d'Art moderne" - 4e version est à découvrir dès le mercredi 19 février.
