The first of Roger Corman’s many low-budget, high-style adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe stories became a huge hit in the summer of 1960, leading Corman to make a total of eight Poe films over the coming years. Philip Winthrop (Mark Damon) travels to the Usher family estate to visit his betrothed, Madeline Usher (Myrna Fahey). The family’s imposing Gothic mansion, located in a desolate patch of swampland, makes for a chilling setting, as does Madeline’s creepy, controlling brother Roderick (Vincent Price), who informs his future brother-in-law of the family’s curse, adding to the eerie atmosphere. Cinematographer Floyd Crosby (HIGH NOON, TABU and many Corman titles) makes inventive use of the CinemaScope frame and shadowy settings to create a suitably dread-filled mood.

Curry will be most remembered for his role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the tyrannical gender-bending alien scientist in both stage and screen versions of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He was 80.

John Hurt gives a moving and powerful performance as John Merrick, a young man in Victorian England afflicted with grievous physical deformations caused by a hereditary condition. Having eked out a miserable existence for years as a circus freak dubbed “The Elephant Man,” Merrick is rescued by Dr. Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins), who restores Merrick’s dignity and provides him material comfort he has never known — but Treves’ altruism contains shades of professional exploitation as well. A visually stylish and moving biopic, THE ELEPHANT MAN was nominated for eight Academy Awards®, including the first of David Lynch’s three directorial nods. Mel Brooks famously produced the film via his then-nascent Brooksfilms banner but asked that he not be credited onscreen for fear audiences would expect a comedy if his name were attached.
