This is 15 years of Sharanya.🌼

Every dancer in this photo is part of a community we have built slowly and intentionally in Maryland, one student, one performance, one year at a time.

And this fall, we are bringing that same spirit to the South Bay, California. The same warmth, the same care, the same belief that dance should help you become more of who you are.

Mahashivaratri 2020. Arya, Amara, Shruthi, and Avani performing Mahadeva Kautuvam, part of a set that also included Chatusra Alarippu and Rasali Jatiswaram alongside Shraddha. ✨

This performance was in February 2020, just weeks before everything shut down. Looking back now, I am so grateful we got this one in. None of us knew what was coming, but this night still feels like a gift.

Mishal came back to Bharatanatyam at 30 after years away. In her own words, it wasn’t just about the dance. It was about proving to herself that growth is possible at any stage of life.

From the archive — Jaya Janaki Kantha, a devotional piece dedicated to Rama, performed at my solo show Prakash in 2019.

Prakash was created in honor of my grandfather, who was a devotee of Rama. Choosing this piece for that show felt inevitable, a way of speaking his language back to him through dance.

What I love is that this piece has lived in so many forms since then. A solo on stage, a group performance at the Cherry Blossom Festival, a different energy every time. Same music, same movement, but the context always changes what it becomes. That is something we get to do through Bharatanatyam, carry the same piece across years, stages, and communities. Something I hope to keep doing in the South Bay this fall. 🌸

At Sharanya, we are not chasing perfection. We are building something slower and more meaningful than that. We are building a real relationship with the dance.

One varnam, three voices. 🪷

For the first half of Sakiye Indha Velayil, each dancer brought her own expression to the abhinaya individually before coming together for the nritta. Same piece, same music, three completely different interpretations of what it means to feel it.

That is what a varnam does. It gives you the structure and then asks you to fill it with yourself.

This is from my first solo show in 2013 — a Kannada Thillana I choreographed as part of a performance called Prakash, in honor of my grandfather.

For our 15th Annual Show, my students and I performed a segment of this Thillana together. After learning it, they wanted to go back and learn the original choreography in full — every movement, exactly as it was.

Going back to this old footage to teach them, I found myself reminiscing on where it all began. There’s something so special about your students wanting to learn a piece of yours from over a decade ago. I’m so flattered, and so grateful. 💛💛
