Gila River Festival

Gila River Festival We’re pleased to announce that Nuevomexicana writer and biologist Leeanna Torres will be this year’s Gila River Festival keynote speaker.

Established in 2005, the Gila River Festival is an annual event that celebrates New Mexico's last free-flowing river and its important role as the centerpiece in our region’s natural and cultural heritage. The Gila Conservation Coalition invites you to the 18th annual Gila River Festival - One Water, Many Currents - September 22 - 25, 2022 in Silver City, the Gila National Forest and along the Gil

a River. The festival will explore the many ways in which water connects us and is the common thread weaving together the Gila River watershed's human and ecological communities of the past, present and into the future. The hybrid (in-person and virtual) event will examine how the Gila River brings us together, investigate human relationships with the Gila River through our many uses of water and cultural perspectives related to water, and facilitate understanding of the ecological systems of the Gila River watershed and human dependence on these systems. The festival will also offer guided hikes and field trips on birding, archaeology, geology, riparian restoration, butterflies, and fishing, as well as the Dance of the Mountain Spirits with the Fort Sill Apache Fire Dancers with the Gooday Family. The full schedule and registration will be available August 1, 2022.

The Gila River Festival has always been about bringing our community together to celebrate New Mexico’s last wild river. That’s why the decision to place the festival on hiatus for the foreseeable future was made with great care. We’re exploring new ways to engage, connect, and celebrate with you in the months and years ahead. Your voice and participation have shaped this event over the past two decades, and we hope to carry that forward in new and meaningful ways. We're committed to finding new paths to gather and celebrate the Gila River in the future. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey that has provided a diversity of opportunities for our community to experience and learn about the natural and cultural history of the Gila through the arts, humanities and natural sciences.

Join Stanley King, Mike Hasson, and Leia Barnett on Saturday September 28th, 2:15 pm at the Silco Theater to discuss protection of the western slope of the Gila bioregion. Protecting all the watersheds that flow from the western slope of the Gila Bioregion is crucial to any conservation effort made for this unique and profoundly important landscape that supports a broad spectrum of wildlife, including multiple threatened and endangered species of flora and fauna. Our speakers will review the watersheds and the threats to them, the essential factors that make them invaluable, and what the conservation community and other concerned citizens can do to protect their future. There is $10 suggested donation at the door but no one turned away for lack of funds.

Did you know jaguars are the third-largest cat species in the world and they evolved in North America eons ago before expanding their distribution to Central and South America? At present, just two male jaguars born in Mexico are known to live in the wild in the U.S., in southeastern Arizona’s sky island mountain ranges. Reintroduction of jaguars to the best remaining habitat in the U.S. – the Gila National Forest – would begin the process of jaguar recovery on the continent where these remarkable felids originated, and would also provide a genetic lifeline to jaguars in northwestern Mexico to which the future U.S. jaguar population could be connected. Join us Saturday, Sept. 28th, 1:00 pm at the Silco Theater, 311 N. Bullard St. to hear from with Michael J. Robinson of the Center for Biological Diversity on this topic. There is a $10 suggested donation at the door but no one turned away for lack of funds. This session will not be offered online.
