There is a story happening inside the story of **Murder Is On The Air**.

Onstage, it's 1957.

There are suspicious characters, tangled relationships, questionable alibis and a murder that somebody is going to have to explain.

Offstage?

There's an entirely different story unfolding.

Actors giving their evenings.

Crew members building the world.

Volunteers helping sell tickets.

People rehearsing after long workdays.

Community members showing up to support something larger than the entertainment itself.

Last year's murder mystery helped raise **more than $10,000 for the GRMC Foundation**.

And I keep thinking about what that really means.

An actor gives a few hours.

An audience member buys a ticket.

A volunteer helps behind the scenes.

And those individual contributions become resources that help support healthcare in our community.

**That's a remarkable transformation of time and talent.**

It's one of the reasons I love community theatre so much.

We make something that didn't exist before.

We share it.

People laugh, wonder, participate and connect.

And sometimes the impact reaches well beyond the stage.

There's something I've noticed about young people in theatre.

Often, the moment they become most interesting is the moment they stop trying to be impressive.

They stop worrying about whether they're doing it correctly.

They listen.

They respond.

They make an unexpected choice.

And suddenly something wonderful happens.

They become present.

Not performing an idea of who they think they're supposed to be.

Actually participating.

I think about that a lot lately.

Our young people are growing up in a world that offers them endless opportunities to watch, compare, scroll and evaluate themselves.

But how many opportunities do they have to simply make something with other people?

That's why I'm still so excited about the Youth Improv Performance Group we're developing with Hallie Clea Harris

🎭 Building toward original ensemble performances

We need six students to launch.

And we're continuing to invite those six young people to find one another.

Not because every teenager needs to become an actor.

But because every teenager deserves opportunities to discover what happens when their ideas matter, their presence matters, and their contribution changes what happens next.

That's a pretty good rehearsal for life.

**I have concerns about the company I've been keeping lately.**

There are secrets.

Questionable motives.

Unexplained relationships.

People who appear to know considerably more than they're willing to admit.

And an alarming number of actors who are becoming very comfortable lying to one another.

Fortunately, it's all in the script. Mostly. 😂

We're getting closer to opening night of **MURDER IS ON THE AIR**, and I have some wonderful rehearsal photographs to share.

But here's the trouble with photographs.

You only see one moment.

You don't know what happened before.

You don't know what happened afterward.

And you certainly don't know whether the person smiling at the camera is entirely innocent.

On **Friday, October 23**, you'll get the opportunity to investigate for yourself.

Today was supposed to be the beginning of our Fall Break Drama Camps.

We didn't gather the six students needed to make the programs financially sustainable, so we're not holding camp this week.

And while I'm disappointed, I'm also learning something important about the difference between **believing in an idea and forcing it to happen before it's ready.**

I've spent a good deal of my life making things happen.

Productions.

Programs.

Opportunities.

Sometimes through sheer determination and a rather unreasonable amount of coffee. 😉

But sustainable creativity asks something more of us.

It asks us to listen.

To notice what families actually need.

To adjust.

To try a different door.

And sometimes to allow an idea to rest until the right people and circumstances come together.

I still believe deeply in what theatre offers young people.

A place to experiment with who they are.

A place to practice courage without having to be fearless.

A place to belong without having to be exactly like everybody else.

So we'll keep creating those opportunities.

And our **Youth Improv Performance Group for ages 13+ with Hallie Harris** remains an invitation we're holding open.

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30–5:30 PM, once our founding six are gathered.

Because some things are worth tending even before they bloom.

And sometimes the most creative thing we can do is **make room for the next possibility.** 🎭❤️

A Rather Different Sunday

This Sunday, The Hearth will hold two very different kinds of listening.

In the morning:

🕯️ Second Sunday Taizé & Contemplative Worship
9:30 AM
Led by Rev. Elizabeth Lyman

A quiet space for music, prayer, reflection and stillness.

Then, a few hours later:

🎙️ Gila Mimbres Live Radio Hour
1:00 PM

The Second Sunday Thespians and Musicians gather around the microphones for live music, original scripts, characters, stories and whatever delightful unpredictability occurs when radio is recorded in front of an actual audience.

One morning.

One building.

Silence and sound. Contemplation and play.

I've come to think we need both.

Places where we can become quiet enough to hear ourselves.

And places where we can laugh loudly enough to remember one another.

Both events are free and open to the community. Donations to support The Hearth or Gila Mimbres Community Radio are gratefully received.

Come for one.

Come back for the other.

THE SUSPECTS ARE GETTING COMFORTABLE 📻🔎

This is becoming a problem.

At first, everybody was holding a script and trying to remember where to stand.

Now?

They're beginning to know things.

They're developing opinions about one another.

They're finding little looks and pauses and reactions that were never printed on the page.

And some of them have become alarmingly convincing liars.

Which is excellent theatre.

Less reassuring in everyday life. 😂

The Quiet Before the Next Thing

I have been thinking about the difference between stopping and becoming still enough to hear.

They aren't the same thing.

Sometimes life gets quieter because nothing is happening.

And sometimes it gets quieter because something inside us is rearranging.

This week I'm resisting the urge to fill every empty space.

There are certainly things to do. Camps to fill. Tickets to sell. Rehearsals. Meetings. Programs taking shape.

But underneath all that doing, there's another question:

What actually deserves my energy now?

As we move deeper into fall, maybe we don't need to drag everything we've accumulated this year into the final months with us.

An old expectation can go.

A habit can go.

A relationship may need a different shape.

A project may need to become simpler.

And something we've neglected because we were “too busy” may turn out to be precisely where the life is.

I'm listening for that.

Not What should I be doing?

But:

Where is the spark still warm?

That's where I'm putting another little piece of wood on the fire. 🔥

What if your spark isn't gone?

What if it's simply been buried under too much noise?

Too many obligations.

Too much information.

Too many things requiring an immediate response.

This week the moon has been gradually giving back its light, reaching its quarter phase today.

I like the reminder.

We are allowed to become quieter.

We are allowed to reconsider.

We are allowed to put something down.

We are allowed to stop feeding what exhausts us and turn toward what restores us.

And as we enter the final three months of 2026, I'm increasingly interested in places where that can happen with other people.

At The Hearth, the autumn ahead holds:

And we're beginning to develop new offerings around creative problem-solving for nonprofits and drama-based practices for healing and counseling professionals.

Different doors.

Same invitation.

Come back to yourself. Then bring that self back into community.

Maybe these last three months aren't asking us to finish everything.

Maybe they're asking us to remember what we want to carry forward.

And perhaps, somewhere in that remembering, we reignite the spark. 🔥

Look closely.

Body language tells stories.

So does the person who won't meet your eye.

The laugh that comes a second too late.

The answer that contains rather more information than the question required.

Of course, these are actors.

So perhaps none of that means anything.

Perhaps. 😏

The kids who need theatre most may not know it yet

Sometimes a parent tells me:

“My child isn't really a theatre kid.”

And I understand what they mean.

They don't sing show tunes through breakfast.

They aren't begging to be center stage.

They may actually be shy.

But theatre isn't only for children who already want an audience.

It's for the child learning to speak up.

The child with a thousand ideas and nowhere to put them.

The child learning how to enter a group.

The child who needs to practice being silly without worrying about getting it “right.”

The child discovering that somebody else's idea doesn't diminish their own.

And the child who simply needs somewhere to belong for a while.

That's why I'm continuing to hold the door open for our fall programs, even though we haven't gathered our six students yet.
