šŸŽ‰ Help us celebrate the promotions of four people who have poured so much of themselves into LatinxEd and helped shape where we’re headed next, Vanessa Martinez, Doug Reyes, Maria Pulido, and Brenda Medina.

šŸš€Vanessa Martinez — Director of Development
Vanessa sees development as more than fundraising, it’s an act of empowerment. She’s built relationships rooted in humanity, trust, and shared purpose, helping amplify the voices of communities too often left out of traditional philanthropy. And if you know Vanessa, you know she’ll probably want to know your sign before anything else. She brings that same curiosity about people, connection, and what makes us all tick into her approach to development. In her new role as Director of Development, Vanessa will continue reimagining what it means to build support for our work.

🌱Doug Reyes — Assistant Director of Development
Doug, or Dinero Doug as the team cariƱosamente calls him, has been a thoughtful relationship-builder and steady partner in growing our development work. In his new role as Assistant Director of Development, Doug will work alongside Vanessa to strengthen our fundraising efforts, deepen partnerships, and build relationships rooted in trust and shared purpose, connecting more people to our mission and helping make our work possible.

🧔 Maria Pulido — Associate Director of Finance and People Operations
Maria, a.k.a la mamÔ de los pollitos.🐣 is one of the steady hands keeping us grounded, keeping the wheels turning, and helping guide us through the waters making sure our people and our operations have what they need to thrive. In her new role, Maria will lead the systems, care, and infrastructure that keep our team centered and push our work.

šŸ«±šŸ¼ā€šŸ«²šŸ¾ Brenda Medina — Associate Director of Communications and Community Engagement
Brenda, the comms queen is usually behind the scenes helping LatinxEd find the words, tell the stories, and build the systems that bring our work to life. From our social feeds to our newsletters, press, campaigns, and everything in between, Brenda makes sure our voice stays rooted in who we are and who we’re here for. In her new role, she’ll continue leading our communications strategy while building community-centered engagement with partners.

These promotions reflect more than new titles. They recognize the leadership, trust, and dedication each of these folks have already brought to LatinxEd, and the ways they’re helping us build what comes next.

šŸ‘šŸ½Ā”Felicidades, Vanessa, Doug, Maria, and Brenda!

🫔 En comunidad, hablamos de todo, even money

Our Fellows and their families came together for a hands-on financial workshop led by 2025 Fellow Dr. Angelica Sanchez and 2023 Fellow Kehilin Azamar Pacheco. Together, they opened the door to money conversations we don’t always get to have at home, and did it all bilingually, making the conversation accessible to todos en la familia.

🌱Angelica and Kehilin met families where they are, from parents preparing for a child heading to college, to soon-to-be empty nesters thinking about investing, to college students learning how to budget. Families brought their real financial questions to the table and got practical answers they could use right away.

Our biggest takeaway? Financial knowledge isn’t just about numbers. It’s about having the tools to make informed decisions, plan for what’s next.
And money wasn’t the only thing on the table. šŸ‘€

šŸ—³ļø The decisions we make as a community can impact our finances, our education, and our families’ futures. That’s why Iza Herrera, Casa Azul Co-Founder + Director of Community Advancement and 2023 LatinxEd Fellow, joined us to share her knowledge about civic responsibility, voter registration, and the importance of staying informed about the decisions that affect our communities.

One thing about us and our community partners: we’re not afraid to talk about the uncomfortable stuff. Because making change means stepping outside our comfort zones, asking the hard questions, and being willing to learn from one another.

🧔 Mil gracias to our Fellows and Coastal Credit Union for helping create the space for these conversations and making room for our community to connect and learn.

šŸŒ„ Western NC, we see you, and we feel the love from your comunidad.

What started as an impromptu invitation to sit in and attend Building Bridges | Construyendo Puentes in Asheville—a Latine Heritage Month event led in collaboration by Hola Carolina, the YMCA of Asheville, and Ricardo Bello-Ball —turned into such a
opportunity for connection and conversation for Andrea and Brenda.

🌱Brenda and Andrea had the chance to learn more about the people, organizations, and ideas already moving Western North Carolina forward. They left feeling inspired by the collaborative work by community organizations and local agencies to help better serve la comunidad Latine and excited to spend more time in the region, deepening relationships and collaboration.

Mil gracias to 2024 LatinxEd Fellow and Unidxs Executive Director Ricardo Bello Ball for bringing comunidad together and creating such a welcoming space. And gracias to everyone who shared their work, their ideas, and a little bit of their vision for Western NC with us.

šŸ˜‰And Western NC, you’ll be seeing more of us.
Nos vemos pronto.

🧔Sometimes, legado looks like watching someone you love step into their power, and realizing you can, too.

When Andrea V. Freile became a LatinxEd Fellow, her journey didn’t end with her. Her daughter Bella watched her grow, lead, and use her voice. Then Bella chose that journey for herself and became a Fellow in her own right.

🄹And now, Andrea’s youngest, Jack, is watching them both.

Eso es legado en familia: Andrea’s path led from Fellow to Executive Director, Bella is shaping a path of her own, and Jack is already dreaming about the day it might be his turn.

šŸ”„Legado is what we carry forward, and what we make possible for those coming next.

Whether you see your own family in this story or want to help more families see what is possible, there is a place for you in this legado.

šŸš€This Latine Heritage Month, help us raise $10,000 to make more stories like this possible. Your gift helps Latine students and leaders step into leadership—and helps the next generation see what is possible for them, too.

šŸ“Š North Carolina’s 2025–26 school data is out! The numbers tell us what’s changing, but our communities help us understand the true impact.

There’s progress worth celebrating: NC’s four-year graduation rate reached a historic 88.8%, and English learners continued making gains, with 36% making progress or exiting English learner status, the highest rate in three years! But the numbers are only the beginning.

šŸŽ“As education advocates, the question becomes: How do we build on that progress and make sure more students experience it?

We look beyond the data, at the programs, practices, and curriculum that are working. But we also talk to the students and families who are seeing that growth. What made a difference? Where did they feel supported?

And just as importantly, we look for the gaps. Who isn’t experiencing the same progress yet? What barriers are still getting in the way? How can we show up differently and better for those students?

šŸš€ The goal isn’t just to see the percentages rise. It’s to make sure more students are part of that progress.
