Youth Running Club wraps up inaugural summer season with track meet

SIDNEY, Neb. - The Sidney Raiders Cross Country Team wrapped up its inaugural summer Youth Running Club Monday with a track meet at Weymouth Field.

The season concluded with a series of fun competitions including a plank challenge, 100-meter dash, bucket-filling relay, Anything But the Baton relay, puzzle relay and three-legged race.

Corbin Elston claimed first place in the plank challenge, while Dylan Elston won the 100-meter dash in 18 seconds. Harper Myers finished first in the three-legged race and shared first place with Shaleigh Dickinson in the bucket-filling relay challenge. Kasen Carwin captured the Anything But the Baton relay, and Dickinson earned first in the puzzle relay.

Sidney Red Raider Cross Country senior Emily Bashtovoi said one of the most rewarding parts of the summer was watching participants grow more confident with each practice.

"My favorite part of having the younger runners join us this summer was getting to watch them grow in their confidence," Bashtovoi said. "The first couple of days, they'd very shyly walk up to you and ask, 'What are we doing today?' When you told them, 'Oh, just an easy mile or two,' their eyes would get big like they thought you were crazy."

As the weeks went on, Bashtovoi said those same runners began embracing the challenge.

"They not only got more comfortable with running, but also with talking to the coaches and older runners," she said. "Seeing that kind of maturity develop in such a short time was neat to witness."

One moment, she said, stood out during a longer training run.

"I asked the girls I was running with if we should slow down," Bashtovoi said. "One of them looked up at me and said, 'No! I can do this.' It made me laugh to see such grit. Kids will definitely keep you in line if you give them the chance."

Bashtovoi said the club benefited both the younger participants and the high school athletes who helped lead workouts throughout the summer.

"I think the Youth Running Club was a successful addition to our team's summer," she said. "I hope it continues in the years to come because it's a great opportunity to expose the future generation to cross country before they reach middle school."

Kids Korner celebrates 23 years of serving Cheyenne County families

SIDNEY, Neb. - Kid’s Korner ECDC Early Childhood Development Center in Sidney is celebrating 23 years of serving Cheyenne County families. The milestone was marked Tuesday, Aug. 4 with ice cream, birthday caps and kids singing Happy Birthday songs.

Since opening its doors, Kids Korner has become a familiar part of the community, providing a safe and nurturing environment where children learn through play and meaningful experiences. Over the years, Kids Korner has cared for generations of families, including former children who now bring their own sons and daughters through its doors.

For Kids Korner Director Tiffany Jones, the anniversary is a reminder of the lasting relationships built with children and their families.

"23 years represents so much more than the number of years we've been open," Jones said. "It represents thousands of little hands we've held, first steps we've celebrated, friendships we've watched blossom and families who have trusted us with their most precious gift."

Jones said watching children grow from infancy into adulthood has been one of the most rewarding parts of her career in early childhood education.

"Being part of the lives of so many children and families has been one of the greatest blessings of my life," Jones said. "Every smile, every milestone and every challenge we've overcome together has strengthened my passion for early childhood education."

Jones said program's philosophy has always centered on the importance of a child's earliest years.

"I firmly believe that the earliest years of a child's life are the most important," she said. "With nearly 90% of brain development occurring before age 5, the experiences we provide today help shape the adults they will become tomorrow. That belief has always been at the heart of Kids Korner and continues to guide everything we do."

Jones also credited the center's teachers and staff for helping create an environment that families have come to trust.

"This anniversary is also a celebration of our amazing teachers and staff, whose dedication, compassion and hard work make Kids Korner feel like home every day," Jones said. "It is because of their commitment that we have built lasting relationships with so many families throughout the years."

As Kids Korner celebrates its 23rd anniversary, Jones said the center remains focused on the future.

"We remain committed to providing exceptional care, creating unforgettable childhood experiences and helping every child grow, learn and thrive," she said.
