They look like they’re smiling… and they’re one of the coolest amphibians you’ll ever meet. 😄

Axolotls are fully aquatic salamanders native to Mexico, and they’re famous for their incredible ability to regenerate lost limbs and even parts of their heart and spinal cord!

Fun Fact: If you catch our axolotls stacked on top of each other, don’t worry—they’re just hanging out. Sharing the same cozy spot is completely normal behavior for these laid-back amphibians. 🩷

You can now pick up fresh Grab & Go sandwiches and salads from local favorite Bistro To Go right in our Gift Shop!

Grab your lunch, then enjoy it in our café or head outside to the Play Pavilion, where the kids can splash in the water play area, climb, play giant Connect 4 and burn off a little energy while you relax. ☀️💦

Ever wonder why shark egg cases are called “mermaid purses”? 🧜‍♀️🦈

These leathery little pouches protect developing shark embryos as they grow. And if you look closely at this one, you can actually see a baby swell shark wriggling around inside! 👀

The embryo is attached to a yolk sac that provides everything it needs while it develops. When it’s finally ready, the tiny shark will hatch out and begin life on its own.

We’ve already welcomed two baby swell sharks from mermaid purses, and now it looks like another little one may be on the way! Even more amazing? There was no male shark present in the tank, which means these babies are most likely the result of parthenogenesis, a rare form of asexual reproduction where an embryo develops without fertilization!

Feeding time for our red serpent sea star.

Fun facts:
⭐ Red serpent sea stars have long, skinny arms that help them move quickly across rocks and reef surfaces.
🍽️ They’re scavengers and predators. Depending on the species, they may eat small invertebrates, bits of animal matter, plankton, or other food they can grab.
🐍 Those snake-like arms are where the “serpent” name comes from. They move by wriggling their arms rather than creeping along on hundreds of tube feet like many other sea stars.
💨 They can move surprisingly fast for a sea star. Serpent stars are generally much more mobile than the classic chunky sea stars most people picture.
👄 Their mouth is on the underside, right in the center where all the arms meet.
🦾 They can sacrifice an arm to escape a predator and, in many cases, regenerate the lost arm over time.

Talk about a five-star spa treatment! 🫧🐟

This cleaner wrasse is hard at work giving our emperor angelfish a little underwater grooming session. Cleaner wrasses specialize in picking parasites, dead skin and other unwanted bits from larger fish—and their “clients” will often patiently pose while they work.

It’s one of the coolest partnerships on the reef💙

Winner, winner clam dinner! 🐚🍽️

Our horse conch was caught in the act enjoying a fresh clam. Horse conchs are powerful predators that use their muscular foot to grab their prey and get to the good stuff inside.

Other fun facts:
🐚 They’re HUGE. Horse conchs are the largest marine snail in North America and can grow to around 2 feet long.
🧡 The bright orange part is the animal. Young horse conchs especially can have a vivid orange-red body that looks surprisingly flashy coming out of the shell.
🏠 Their shell grows with them. Like other snails, the shell is part of the animal and gets larger as the conch grows.
🌴 They’re a Florida icon. The horse conch was named Florida’s state shell in 1969.
