It is with great sadness, that we report the passing of Oxide's visionary- Joe Monk. Joe renovated the Oxide building -brick by brick, investing in downtown Lynchburg when the Craddock Terry Hotel was in it's planning stages. He was good at finding potential. Chatham and Justin helped to finish the building with little touches, like hoisting a metal lion head from a Charleston, West Virginia bank building to affix to the front of the little purple shop. Joe retired from the Oxide business in 2011 but his commitment to art, craft, making, and doing continued until his passing on December 4th, 2024. If you are a friend of Oxide, you are a friend of Joe's. Thank you.

A fresh batch of textured work out of the kiln today. Mugs, whiskey cups, juice glass- if you have the liquid, we have the receptacle. This is known as a reticulation glaze. Textures like lichen, crawl and beading fall into this category to name a few. It call comes down to glaze chemistry. The stabilizer ingredients are found in a higher ratio to the flux and glass former. This causes greater surface tension in the melting glaze during firing. The glaze then crawls/bead and move, creating a nice uniform texture. If you start getting sloppy at the end of the night, it serves as a nice anti-slip surface too. A little more grip for the inebriated user. If you are into that sort of thing.
