[Past Event] Tuesday, June 3 — Jazz at the CAP proudly presents the JEFF DENSON TRIO: "I'LL FLY AWAY" CD Release which just received a ★★★★ review in the upcoming DownBeat July 2014 issue!

Here's an excerpt: “Double bassist Jeff Denson capitalizes on his considerable gifts as an improviser, interpreter and sonic trailblazer in these…surprising recordings. At once playful and welcomingly bizarre…I’ll Fly Away offers unique interpretations of traditional music, as insightful as they are joyous. …That these songs retain their beauty under fire proves their resilience and the musicians’ great invention and skill." — Ken Micallef, DownBeat Magazine

• Jon Arkin | drums www.jonarkin.net

After more than a decade in the internationally acclaimed cooperative trio Minsarah (which he founded with Florian Weber and Ziv Ravitz) and his seven-year tenure in the Lee Konitz New Quartet, bassist and composer Jeff Denson is forging into new territory with his new trio, featuring Joshua White on piano. Connecting powerfully when they first met in 2005, Jeff and Joshua have been performing together in a variety of settings ever since, often in a duo setting focusing heavily upon hymns and spirituals. Their recent duo recording, "I’ll Fly Away" – featuring unique interpretations of this music — was released on pfMENTUM Records in April. Deciding to expand into a trio, Jeff added drummer Jon Arkin whose dynamic, polyrhythmic technique provides the ideal complement to complete the synergy needed to best convey Jeff’s musical vision.

[Past Event] Wednesday, May 21 — Jazz at the CAP proudly presents the JENNIFER LEITHAM TRIO!

Seating is limited! Advanced tickets available online at a discounted rate until 6pm!

JENNIFER LEITHAM TRIO
• Jennifer Leitham | bass, vocals
• Rich Eames | piano
• Randy Drake | drums

“The world that Leitham has moved in since the early ‘80s has been at the center of the highest levels of jazz performance. More than 100 recordings as an A-list bassist, eight CDs of her own, long-term stints with Mel Tormé, Doc Severinsen, and the Woody Herman Thundering Herd; as well as appearances with the likes of Gerry Mulligan, Joe Pass, Louis Bellson, Bill Watrous, Cleo Laine and dozens of others attest to the far-ranging versatility of her playing.” — Don Heckman, Jazz Times

“As a soloist, Leitham is in a class by herself. At the core of her powers area rich plummy sound, an astonishing virtuosity, unerring intonation, and a deep sense of swing. Leitham’s trio, to borrow from the argot of rock, is a power group extraordinaire.” — Chuck Berg, Topeka Capitol
Journal

“…prodigious technique and improvisatory prowess promptly erase any emotion except awe.” — Robert Bragonier, 52nd St. Jazz

“Left-handed virtuoso of the upright bass.” – Leonard Feather

Come see for yourself and be inspired by the timeless and hopeful songs of the '60s R&B scene played by one of the great big bands of present times.
