For twenty years, my mother made sure the homeless boy living behind our house never went hungry. After her funeral, he took both my hands in his and told me, "Before she died, she BEGGED ME TO KEEP HER SECRET FROM YOU."
I was eight years old when Gabriel first started living at the dump behind our home. He couldn't have been more than eighteen. He had no family, no job, and nowhere else to go, so my mother began bringing him food every single day.
My father had recently passed away, and we were struggling to make ends meet. Every penny mattered to us. Some days, we barely had enough food for ourselves. Even so, Gabriel never missed a meal, and sometimes the food Mom gave him was better than anything we had at our own table.
One afternoon, I watched her carry an apple pie outside for him. It was my absolute favorite dessert.
"Is that what we're having for dinner?" I asked.
"No, honey. This is for Gabriel."
I felt so betrayed that I burst into tears. I couldn't understand why she was feeding a stranger when our own family was struggling and needed help, too. But instead of comforting me, Mom became angry.
"NEVER say that about Gabriel again."
From that day forward, I resented him. It felt as if he had taken my mother's love and attention away from me. Whenever Gabriel tried to get close to me or become my friend, I turned him away. As soon as I graduated from high school, I left for another city and never looked back.
My mother and I hardly spoke for years, until I found out that she was dying.
She had suffered a stroke, leaving her in an extremely serious condition. When I finally arrived at the hospital, Gabriel wasn't there by her bedside. Mom was barely able to speak, but she managed to say one thing to me.
"Don't abandon Gabriel. Promise me."
I won't pretend I wasn't angry. Gabriel hadn't even shown up at the hospital, yet my mother was still thinking about him and worrying about what would happen to him. Nevertheless, I couldn't bring myself to refuse her final request.
She passed away later that very same day.
After the funeral, I prepared dinner and drove back to our old house, believing Gabriel must still be living somewhere nearby.
But when I arrived, Gabriel was nowhere to be found.
Instead, I noticed a black SUV parked along the curb.
Standing beside it was a clean-shaven man dressed in an expensive coat.
"I was beginning to think you weren't going to come," he said, his eyes filling with tears.
"Gabriel?" I asked, staring at him in disbelief.
He smiled at me, although there was something uncertain about his expression.
"I brought you some dinner," I said, my heart beating faster. "But Gabriel, what happened to you? How can this be possible?"
He looked directly into my eyes.
"Your mother kept this from you," he replied. "Before she d:ie:d, she BEGGED ME TO KEEP HER SECRET FROM YOU. You should sit down for this."
