Friday, Oct 23 at 7 pm: The Blair Witch Project, film and talk.

Three film students vanish in the Maryland woods while making a documentary about a local legend. A year later, their footage is found. Made on a tiny budget with handheld cameras, the 1999 film was presented as if it were real footage, and its slow-building fear scared audiences more than any monster could. It inspired many horror films that followed, including Paranormal Activity.

Stay after the film for commentary by Allison Gunn, author of the Appalachian horror novel Nowhere and Shepherd University graduate student in Appalachian Studies. Moderated by Shepherd University Professor Ben Bankhurst.

Presented in partnership with the Center for Appalachian Studies & Communities at Shepherd University.

Tonight 10/17: Trae Sheehan is home from the road.

The Eastern Panhandle songwriter, who grew up on an alpaca farm and went to shows here as a kid, plays the Opera House tonight in the middle of his fall tour. His 2019 album Arizona reached the Top 10 on the Roots Radio Charts, and his show here last year sold out.

Tonight 10/16: Ladies in Black, 7 pm

Sydney, summer of 1959. A 16-year-old takes a holiday job at a grand department store, where the saleswomen in black open her eyes to a wider world. Julia Ormond stars, and Bruce Beresford, director of Driving Miss Daisy, spent more than 20 years bringing this warm comedy of manners to the screen.

A Shepherdstown Film Society selection. Discussion follows the film for those who wish to stay.

Tonight: songwriters on stage.

Davey O and Steve Warner & Company share the bill for a relaxed evening of acoustic music. Davey brings more than two decades of Americana story songs from Buffalo. Steve, joined by Mike Janney and Andy Mosholder, brings the originals many of you know from the First Friday Coffeehouse and The Rolling Coyotes.

He grew up on an alpaca farm in the Eastern Panhandle and went to shows at the Opera House as a kid. Now Trae Sheehan tours North America, and THIS SATURDAY 10/17 he’s home for one night.

His Americana has a folk-rock pulse, and his live show is one man, one guitar, and a room that usually ends up singing along. His album "Arizona" reached the Top 10 on the Roots Radio Charts, and "Postcards from the Country: drew praise from American Songwriter and PopMatters. His show here at the Opera House last year sold out.

Opening the night: Clear the Benches, the alternative country project of Nashville’s Todd Joseph.

Meet Davey O.

The Buffalo songwriter shares the bill with Steve Warner & Company this Thursday, Oct 15. Davey writes Americana story songs drawn from everyday life, which is why The Buffalo News credited him with “a journalist’s eye for detail.”

He was a New Folk Finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival and has opened for Suzanne Vega, Jim Lauderdale and Poco. Since 2020, he has donated all proceeds from his digital Share Project releases to his local food bank.

An evening of acoustic music at the Opera House. Doors 6:30 pm, music 7 pm.
