Today I had the opportunity to photograph and film Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 as it passed through Westlake, Ohio.
For those who are not railroad enthusiasts, Big Boy is the largest operating steam locomotive in the world and one of only a handful of surviving giants from the golden age of American railroading. Built in 1941, these locomotives were designed to haul heavy freight across the Wasatch Mountains, and seeing one in motion is a reminder of what American engineering and industry were capable of accomplishing.
This is a piece of living history. The whistle, the smoke, the size of the locomotive, and the sound of the machinery working together made for an unforgettable experience.
