Lynyrd Skynyrd became one of the biggest rock bands of the 1970s, but at heart they were still just regular Southern guys. Ronnie Van Zant was more comfortable fishing, hunting and hanging around with friends than trying to live like some untouchable rock star.

Even as the money and fame grew, the band never really fit the glamorous celebrity image. They came from working-class backgrounds around Jacksonville, Florida, and carried that attitude with them. A day spent fishing and holding up a big bass was a lot closer to who Ronnie really was than limousines, fancy clothes and Hollywood parties.
