BREAKING: Loser Trump tries to invent a win by announcing new Greenland deal that WE ALREADY HAD.
Since the beginning of his second term, Donald Trump has made no secret of the fact that he’s been lusting over Greenland. Both Greenland and Denmark, the EU member that the world’s largest non-continental island is an integral part of, have been giving him nothing but a cold shoulder after Trump declared that he wanted to annex Greenland to become part of the United States.
Trump’s plan is sort of like what Russia has tried to do with Ukraine and what Germany did to Austria, the Sudetenland, Poland, and Czechoslovakia during World War II.
Now, after failing to convince Denmark to accede to his wishes, Trump just declared, via Truth Social, that the United States has secured "permanent control over security, and all other needs" in Greenland, an "Infinite Life" agreement he says will last forever, with, he insists, "NO COST to the United States!"
Read that carefully. The president is describing an arrangement giving America perpetual military control over another sovereign territory's security decisions, veto power over any foreign investment or military presence there, and the "complete ability to do what is necessary" in Greenland, indefinitely, with no expiration date. Trump also announced plans to "immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence" on the island.
For context, Trump has spent much of his second term openly threatening to simply seize Greenland outright, floating annexation and refusing to rule out military force, alarming Denmark, a NATO ally, and provoking widespread condemnation from European leaders. Now he's framing what sounds like an extraordinary expansion of American military presence and control as some kind of triumphant diplomatic breakthrough no previous president could pull off in "100 years."
Except the U.S. already has three military bases in Greenland — established via a 1951 defense agreement— and the details of this new deal remain conspicuously vague. What exactly did Denmark and Greenland agree to? What does "no cost" actually mean when you're talking about building new military installations? What did Greenland's own government and people actually consent to, versus what Trump is simply declaring unilaterally in a social media post? Trump's announcement reads less like a formal, verifiable treaty summary and more like a victory lap written entirely in his own voice, heavy on superlatives, light on specifics anyone could actually verify or hold him accountable to.
This is the same pattern we've seen throughout Trump's second term: grand, self-congratulatory declarations about renaming lakes, claiming ownership of international straits, and now apparently locking in permanent, infinite American military control over Greenland, all announced via all-caps social media posts rather than through actual transparent diplomatic processes Congress or the public can meaningfully review.
Whether this "agreement" holds up to scrutiny and what strings are actually attached, none of that gets answered by a Truth Social post declaring victory.
After Trump posted about the deal, Danish and Greenlandic officials confirmed that they expected to sign some sort of agreement next week during the UN General Assembly.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also subsequently announced that “I am pleased that there is the prospect of a good agreement for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States. An agreement that strengthens our common security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic region and is therefore also good for NATO and Europe. And an agreement that at the same time recognizes the Kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.”
With the “prospect of a good agreement” on the table, it remains to be seen exactly what the terms of the deal may be and whether any last minute demands from Trump might derail it.
