One of our mature pines was not doing so hot and we were having some water retention issues on the property. After some investigation I found landscaping fabric from the previous home owner to be the culprit. It was tightly woven into the root system of our tree and was installed upside down around the corner of our home preventing drainage.
Beware the improper usage of landscaping cloth. It has its uses but can also cause a lot of damage.
