On Wednesday, June 11th I will be having a viewing of my video that I have been working on for some time now with the August Wilson archives. As the poster says, it will be at the Hillman library at the University of Pittsburgh. If you can make it to the viewing, you are welcome to attend.

For this video I was supposed to use the August Wilson archives solely but when I got started I had one idea of the direction I was heading. Then I ran into a speech that August Wilson gave called the ground on which I stand and it was very moving. When he made this speech he had already won a couple Pulitzer prizes for his plays, but he saw it fit to use his fame to call out what he saw as injustices towards black folks in his industry. So I saw this as a call to action which I used to call out the nonsense that I see and whitewashing that I feel is taking place with respect to the ill deeds that have been done in the past to black folks in the US.
The entire piece was made up of publicly sourced images, video and sound from the library of Congress, The August Wilson archives and a couple others.

For the poster I used a print from the late 1800s when some folks were upset about the Reconstruction act.

For this year's Barrel and flow, I collaborated with New France brewing company for the event. My design was used on the cover of the can and I think it looks pretty cool. The beer is amazing and big up to New France Brewing!

Over the last few years my mind has had to deal with a myriad of emotions. Unwanted ones. All related to the color of my skin. The much-publicized deaths of black men at the hands of police terrifies me. Not because I am involved in some type of nefarious activity, but because it ultimately comes down to how you look. And this applies to all aspects of my life.

Painting is how I digest and unpack these emotions, in a world which I feel only minorities are privy to.

As Charles White (African American artist) said:
“Paint is the only weapon I have with which to fight what I resent. If I could write, I would write about it. If I could talk, I would talk about it. Since I paint, I must paint about it.”

I am so grateful to for providing a platform for me to showcase. In this new body of work, I use basic marks to create the environment in which a story resides. I use the dynamic nature of color to create a feeling of depth and movement in the piece, which I believe helps with the overall meaning.

Most of my work is about me unpacking my emotions about current news events. Ultimately my hope is that the finished piece will allow the viewer to explore the different emotions these news events conjure up.
