Janina Simutis Art

Janina Simutis Art Local Fine Art done with oils and acrylics. Originals and Giclee canvas prints available. Alaska "The Last Frontier", is home to local artist Janina Simutus.

Nina, as her friends call her, began to study Alaska's beauty at a very young age while helping her father Ray aboard his commercial fishing boat the Leslie M. It would be many years later that Nina would transform those childhood memories on Resurrection Bay to canvas. The Vibrant colors and complex patterns of nature aroused Nina's artistic desires to capture their magnificent beauty in detail.

With such a diverse landscape in Alaska, Nina went to work. With every stroke of her brush, Nina began to create her most challenging works of art! Many artists spend their entire lives trying to achieve the notoriety that Nina has reccieved in the few short years that she has been painting. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, Nina traveled around the world only to return home, to the sleepy seaside town of Seward, Alaska. Her fascination with her natural surroundings led her to take up painting as a hobby. Noticing her amazing talent's, her friends and family urged her to push on and Nina's artistic style was born.

While going through photos of my older pieces I stumbled on this one titled “current times ll” when I created this piece the series was based on climate change and represented the feelings I felt towards all the change. I feel like it is a good representation of the time the world is going through these days as well. Storms, currents and wind brings change although scary and not fun during the chaos when the storm passes is a beautiful calm and new growth that couldn’t have happened without it.

One of the reasons I love doing what I do is because I have to slow down and enjoy the process. It’s meditative once I embrace it. It will sometimes take days for me to just prep the nature items to be able to then work the countless hours of applying it all. But in the end I’m always amazed at what came out of slowing down😌 this is prep for just one minor element to the octopus piece. Plucking the seeds from leaves with out crushing them 🍁 thank you for providing the leaves!🙏🏻 best gift ever!
