Sesser Opera House

Sesser Opera House The official Sesser Opera House page. The Sesser Opera House is a historic theatre in the heart of Sesser, IL. It was then redesigned and rebuilt.

Originally built in 1904, the first theatre burned down in 1914. Since it's reconstruction, it has hosted a variety of entertainment, including plays, movie showings, traveling musicians and more.

We are so grateful for the incredible support of Lowanda Johnston and Modern Woodmen of America!

Lowanda has been a champion of the Sesser Opera House for nearly her entire life, and her commitment to this community never wavers. Through Modern Woodmen's match-grant program, funds raised at our 7th Annual Sesser Mouse Derby were matched with a $2,500 contribution that went straight toward something you can now hear for yourself: brand new speakers in our theatre!

And of course, a big thank you to everyone who came out and supported the Mouse Derby this year. You helped make this happen!

We have a quick update to our 2026 movie schedule. Unfortunately, our showing of Top Gun: Maverick planned for Friday, July 17th has been cancelled due to a sudden and unforeseen change in the film's licensing status by it's studio. We're disappointed too, as we know a lot of folks were looking forward to it.

The good news is that the Girl Scouts Franklin County Service Unit #51 have graciously stepped up to sponsor a showing of Troop Beverly Hills on Sunday, July 19th at 2PM. Thank you to the Girl Scouts for helping us keep a film on the schedule for July!

Looking ahead, we're excited to announce that GOAT will be showing on Sunday, November 8th at 2PM. A fitting movie for basketball season!

We also have one more announcement coming for our August schedule, so be sure to follow the page so you don't miss it!

The Sesser Showcase is calling all performers! Our stage is waiting for your talents to shine. 🌟

We're celebrating the performing arts talent of Southern Illinois with a Variety Show on Saturday, August 22nd at 7PM, and we'd love for you to be part of it. Musicians, comedians, magicians, dancers, instrumentalists, and other family friendly acts are all welcome!

The Sesser Opera House is exploring the idea of a family‑friendly Variety Show tentatively during the month of July, and we’re checking to see—

Are there performers in our community who would be interested in participating?

We’re looking to gauge interest from:

We’re excited to bring another year of movies to the Opera House in 2026!

Our first showing will be You've Got Mail on Saturday, February 7th at 7PM. This fan-favorite romantic comedy is a great way to usher in the Valentine’s season.

This is just the start of the full slate of showings we have in store. A few titles will have to wait until closer to their dates to be announced. We can’t wait to show you what else is coming!

What a year it has been at the Sesser Opera House. Since June, we hosted 10 movies showings, welcomed live performances back to our stage, and launched a brand new Youth Advisory Committee. Every ticket in this collage represents a memory made and a moment shared in this historic space.

Thank you to everyone who attended our events and helped make each one a success. Your support and enthusiasm continue to bring this theatre to life.
