Summer handed us adventuresโ€”new places, new experiments, a few triumphs, and maybe a couple lessons learned the hard way. Now the leaves are turning, football season has kicked off, and the year is heading into its final stretch.

So... what story does autumn bring out in you ~ the one that stirs when the season shifts and dares you to wander off the expected path, or ignore the path entirely and see where you end up?

Come for the stories. Stay for the โ€œIโ€™ve been there!โ€ moments. ๐Ÿ

For Dee Cantlon, our first featured artist for September, thatโ€™s exactly where things got interesting.

Scuba diving in the Caribbean and Pacific opened up a world of brilliant color, curious creatures, and constant motionโ€”and Dee brought plenty of that inspiration back to the studio. Her fascination with marine life keeps bubbling up in her artwork. And she didnโ€™t stop exploring on land: Ireland, Greece, the Inca Trail, and other adventures have added even more fuel to her love affair with the natural world.

This September, dive into Deeโ€™s colorful world at Blue Whole Gallery. Come curious. Stay awhile. You never know what might surface.

There's electricity in the air. The gallery gets livelier. Our artists linger and mingle. People drift through the door โ€œjust for a minute,โ€ and suddenly theyโ€™re laughing, pointing, discovering something amazing they absolutely did not expect.

Thatโ€™s the magic of First Friday.

Our Student Artist of the Month is ceramic artist, scupltor and educator Steve Belz, whose work explores the intersection of contemporary life and nature. With roots in Environmental Studies and Fine Arts, Steve blends thoughtful inquiry with quiet beauty. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŽจ

Born in Olympia, Steve spent over a decade in a small Colorado mountain town working as a potter and carpenter before earning his M.F.A. at Kansas State University. He returned to Washington in 2015 to lead the ceramics program at Peninsula College, where heโ€™s now a tenureโ€‘track professor. His work is exhibited widely, and he continues to teach and share his craft across the country.

Meet Steve and see his art in person this Friday at First Friday Art Walk. Hope to see you there!

Thereโ€™s something about September on the Olympic Peninsula ~ the mountains sharpen, the air begins to change, and the days begin to get a bit shorter.

From all of us at Blue Whole Gallery, welcome to a new season, a new month of art, inspiration, and the beauty that surrounds us.

Inspiration comes from all sorts of places, but for our own Shayna Robnett Art ~ oil painter and the heartbeat of Lilly's Safe Haven ~ it often struts right past her studio window in full feathered flair. Her animals have a talent for sparking ideas, and nothing kicks off a painting session quite like a perfectly fluffed chicken caboose. With muses like these, creativity doesnโ€™t just flowโ€ฆit sashays.

From spark to spectacle, our metal artist, Gary Roberts, has been up to mischief again. What began as a humble hunk of steel quickly found itself cut, bent, coaxed, hammered, welded, and sweetโ€‘talked into becoming something far more interesting. Many steps, countless sparks, and one very determined maker later, the final piece emergesโ€”part sculpture, part alchemy, and entirely worth the mess it took to get here. Meet "King Olaf, A Great Dane!"

"Sometimes a piece of art makes you stop because you want to know the story. The quiet, monochromatic greys and shadowy landscape in Sheri Cox Whetstine's piece draw me toward the woman standing alone. I find myself wondering, 'Is she okay? Where is she going? And why is she alone?'"
