Andy and I never got the opportunity to truly connect despite crossing paths many times during the time I spent in Moab for 6 GGBYโs. That said, I like to think our minds truly met when my Amsteel net, Sky Castle, was rigged over top of his net (The Mansion?) during GGBY 2018.
I had messaged Andy before hand for advice on weaving my net and shared my vision to rig our nets stacked up in the Wet Beaver Cove. Eventually, over several months of conversation, Jerry, Ryan, and I worked out the technical details, and then together (sans Andy) bolted anchors in Beaver Cove. It was absolute creative bliss to see it all come together and the cherry on top was watching Andy do practice BASE jumps off my net on to his. Looking back I wish i had gotten on the net with him and shared that moment.
If I had the opportunity now I would have liked to share with him how GGBY 2015 inspired me to organize the 2016 Smoke Hole (now Stoke Hole) Highline Gathering in Smoke Hole, WV. At the time I was a new highliner and attending the event as a participant was surreal and overwhelming in the best ways possible, and threw gasoline on my already raging fire for highlining. The SHHG is still going strong today and I believe is the first and longest running highline gathering on the east coast, going into its 10th year.
Lastly Iโd tell him about how he was kind of a dick the very first time we met at Turkey Boogie 2015 and the impression it left and the lesson i learned, which is that rules are made up and only matter so much as there is someone willing to enforce them.
Stay high Andy, you fu***ng legend ๐ชฝ๐ชฝ
