The Ksar Draa in Timimoun, Algeria, is an ancient ruin that stands out in the middle of an ocean of dunes, and it’s history has been lost over the centuries.
Ksar Draa is a mysterious and architecturally unique fortified structure located near Timimoun in Algeria’s Adrar Province, deep within the central Sahara Desert, whose strategic design and secluded location suggest it may have served as a military outpost or fortified refuge along ancient trade routes. Though its exact origin remains uncertain, some sources date its construction to as early as the 1st century CE, while others suggest it was built around the 14th century, possibly during the height of trans-Saharan trade.
Built using traditional Saharan techniques with adobe (clay, straw, and stone), the ksar is notable for its circular layout, double-layered defensive walls, and three-level internal design devoid of external windows or visible staircases.
