Meet the Musicians: Ethan Leinwand

Last but certainly not least, Ethan Leinwand takes center stage as both a performer and the newly selected Artistic Director of the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival. Based in St. Louis, Leinwand has become a driving force in the region’s ragtime and blues scene, known for his commitment to preserving and revitalizing early piano traditions.

A self-taught pianist, he specializes in barrelhouse blues, with a repertoire that stretches from ragtime to boogie-woogie—bringing the full story of blues piano to life. Since making St. Louis his home, he has been a regular presence in local venues and festivals, collaborating with artists like Valerie Kirchhoff and T.J. Muller, and helping to build a strong, connected ragtime community.

Leinwand’s impact extends beyond performance. He is president and co-founder of the St. Louis Ragtime Initiative, and was named the Scott Joplin Foundation's 2026 Artist-in-Residence—an honor that reflects both his artistry and leadership within the ragtime community. As he steps into his new role as Artistic Director, his vision signals an exciting future for the festival.

Join us in Sedalia to welcome Ethan into this new chapter and experience his powerful connection to the music.

Meet the Musicians: Martin Spitznagel

Internationally recognized pianist and composer Martin Spitznagel brings passion, personality, and a touch of humor to the world of vintage American piano music. An “evangelist of syncopation,” he has been called “utterly astonishing” at the keyboard for his dynamic and engaging performances.

Spitznagel discovered ragtime at age 12 and quickly rose to national attention—winning a Yamaha Disklavier at just 14 in a nationwide competition. A year later, he began studying with Tony Caramia, who encouraged him to “find the surprise” in every performance—a philosophy that continues to shape his lively and expressive style.

When he’s not performing, Martin works as an instructional designer, writer, and filmmaker in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he lives with his wife and three children. He returns to Sedalia this year with his first new album in over a decade, making his appearance all the more exciting.

Join us in Sedalia to experience a performer who brings both artistry and joy to the ragtime stage.

Meet the Musicians: Dr. Dave Majchrzak

Recently retired from his career as a veterinarian, “Dr. Dave” is now enjoying more time on the road, sharing his music with audiences near and far.

With more than 25 years of performances at ragtime and early jazz festivals across the country, he is a familiar and beloved presence at the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival. His career highlights include performing for the Emperor of Japan during a 1994 U.S. visit, along with appearances for numerous distinguished audiences.

Dr. Dave has also played a significant leadership role in the ragtime community, serving as Artistic Director of the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival for six years, Music Director of the Chippewa Valley Ragtime Festival, and President of the Friends of Scott Joplin organization in St. Louis. He has helped bring ragtime to new audiences across Missouri, from the St. Louis Riverfront to the Missouri State Fair, and has been recognized as a Missouri State Touring Performer.

With an extensive discography of solo and traditional jazz recordings, Dr. Dave continues to share his passion for ragtime with energy and heart.

Join us in Sedalia to celebrate one of Missouri’s own and a true champion of ragtime music.

Meet the Musicians: Eric Shore

Pianist Eric Shore brings a unique and adventurous path to the ragtime stage. After attending the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival in 2013, he discovered a deep passion for ragtime and early American music, performing actively before stepping away to pursue academic studies in international politics.

In a remarkable turn, Shore spent time living off the grid in a remote cabin in the mountains of eastern Arizona. Since returning to Michigan in early 2025, he has fully recommitted to music—now performing solo recitals, collaborating with jazz and folk ensembles, and dedicating himself entirely to refining his craft.

With his first studio recording planned for release in late 2026, Shore represents a compelling new chapter in ragtime performance—driven by curiosity, discipline, and a deep personal connection to the music.
