This art installation resembles an ordinary library bookshelf showcasing banned books in 2025. My interest in banned books started when I was informed there was a list, while I was teaching my art programs at the local libraries.
Assisted by numerous librarians who recommended resources to discover additional titles, I compiled a comprehensive list of 180 banned books. These works include texts on Mexican American and Puerto Rican history, civil rights literature by African American authors, writings by Muslim women, and LGBT children's books.
This art installation advocates for the freedom to read and express oneself, raise awareness about literacy emphasizing the transformative power of knowledge over censorship.
My work as a teaching artist in libraries has increased my drive to translate these issues through visual storytelling. Governments have a responsibility to uphold the right to read and think independently, as books offer valuable depth, understanding, and personal empowerment.
I created Li{es}~Bravery on a large piece of canvas using acrylic paint and markers over a period of three-month in 2025. Thanks to 4Culture for sponsoring it, and to Renton Library for displaying it during Banned Books Week this year. Just remember knowledge is power, read books!
I encourage you to check out any of these books at your local library and ask yourself
Why Literacy is important to you and your family?
