Labor Day for me means another business anniversary. Happy 12 years of Matthew Wolk Mastering! Here’s a random pic of me from this summer’s activities.

Thanks to everyone who has supported me on this journey, and an even bigger thanks to the artists and bands for trusting me to put on the final touches on their music and allowing me to call this a career!

The holidays are upon us! Don’t get caught in a rush on your holiday music plans. Start right now or as soon as possible so you can get it finished in time to be considered for playlists, sync licensing, ad spots, etc.

If done correctly you can make some good money this holiday season off of your music! Of course I’m here for those final mastering touches whenever you are ready.

Tonight was a personal milestone in this little live sound journey I’ve been on… I finally got behind a proper digital mixer! I’ve been doing a lot of small PA shows and more basic setups with simple analog mixers, but I never really had the opportunity to test my experience on what is basically an industry standard.

I’ve had some imposter syndrome around this because obviously my skills are in the mastering realm and I have little experience in this live sound world. These digital boards are complex and intimidating if you don’t know what you’re doing. I never want to be the guy that messes it up, causes screeching feedback, or generally the reason a show sounds bad.

The whole reason I got into this as a side hustle was to help improve the live sound experience across as many Seattle shows possible. I needed something new to challenge me and work towards, and personally wanted to see what would happen if you throw a behind the scenes mastering engineer into the fire and controlled chaos that is live sound.

I think it’s safe to say tonight marks the next step up in this journey. Time to lock in and get some muscle memory on this board and then it’s time for the big leagues (Nectar lounge, Hidden Hall, maybe Numos 👀)

The biggest thing I’ve learned over the past year of this live sound journey is getting out of your comfort zone is always a good thing. I love my little at home mastering routine each week, but now I look forward to when I have shows booked because it always throws me a new challenge.

This original album from 2024 was one of the highlights of my year. We pushed the boundaries, got aggressive as all hell, and still managed to pull off a crazy cohesive album! Nobody I work with sounds like this group so it was a goal of mine to help them stand out. 🫡

Fast forward a year later after the release and gave me the opportunity to add in a few more new songs for a deluxe version! Revisiting the project was really refreshing but also challenging at the same time because the new songs are produced and mixed by a different team.

It can be really tricky to balance old with new in this situation but I think we really pulled it off!

I want to announce a new side quest I’m perusing in 2026. You might have seen a few stories about some live sound gigs I’ve been supporting with Sofar Sounds, this is just the start. I never really had a desire to get into live sound the after college, but my experience at local shows has been disappointing more often than not. Bad show mixes, unbearably slow set changes, FOH engineers on phones surfing TikTok, generally not playing attention, and missing key solos or performance features during a set. The list goes on…

Live sound is more attention to detail than mastering. There are no revisions, no replaying the song again for fine tuning, you get it right or you mess it up. Seattle has been a music hub for many years and the local musicians deserve a great live show! I want to use my mastering expertise to help level up live sound in a way that makes you feel something, gives you goosebumps, and maybe brings you to tears. I’m going to master live sound! 😉

Stay tuned! I’m getting my chops up with more low pressure smaller shows, but I’m feeling really close to expanding really soon to larger venues, bigger bands, and full digital boards with the ultimate control! If anyone can open some doors around that aspect let me know! Even if it’s just an on-call opportunity.

Don’t worry, mastering certainly continues around here full-time during the daylight hours! This is purely a side gig and passion project I’m working towards!

Spotify wrapped dropped so I want to showcase a beautiful success story that is still progressing!

No stranger to this feed is my guy one of the most genuine and devoted artists you’ll ever meet. I don’t think many people understand how hard he’s working for this trajectory.

My introduction to this journey started 3 years ago on this dining room table at my family’s house. I don’t think a lot of people know this, but each year I always leave Seattle for a little holiday season getaway and work remotely at my parent’s place. Perks of working on headphones, the workstation can travel with me! Some of the biggest songs I’ve mastered were done at this table!

It was mid-December 2022 when the final mixes for LINDENAVE! were delivered to me and I knew at that moment this was the start of something big. Fresh off of a trip to Paris for a mastering masterclass with my favorite mastering engineer and an absolute legend in the industry, I was definitely inspired and in the zone. I put my all into everything I work on, but that December in particular was electric! Needless to say masters turned out incredible!

Now 3 years later and several other projects behind in he has reached some astonishing numbers and milestones: 500,000+ monthly listeners, passing 20,000,000 streams in a single year, worldwide growth, and so much more! Honored to say that I’ve proudly mastered every single release for this incredible artist and team! Loyalty in this industry is rare so these moments are cherished. The journey continues! 📈
