"I dragged them across the ocean with me (No. 2)" by Samantha Yun Wall
Conté crayon, charcoal, and ink on Dura-Lar
30 x 40 x 1.5 inches

Samantha Yun Wall, recipient of the Seattle Art Museum’s 2024 Betty Bowen Award, explores identity through richly rendered figures inspired by Korean mythology and personal history. Working in ink, charcoal, and conté crayon, Wall creates striking black-and-white compositions in which silhouetted and fragmented figures visualize the tensions between visibility and erasure, intimacy and distance.

"At 95, Cole still works for hours a day in his free-standing studio just across the lawn from the former church he and his wife, artist Joan Wortis, turned into a home after arriving on Vashon in the 1990s. The pair had never before heard of the island when they came and didn’t know a soul.

But the church’s walls were big enough to hold Cole’s canvases, so they made an offer and their bid was accepted.

“It happened by magic,” Cole said."

Thank you to Scarlet Hansen at the Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber for this wonderful article about Donald Cole! Read the full article here:

Inside a sunlit Vashon studio, Donald Cole opens drawer after drawer crammed full of paintings and drawings.

"From my earliest days to this moment, I have reacted to and remembered the things I experience by drawing, painting and making art. When I wake in the morning, I know what I must do in the studio.

My work is abstract but always tied to an impression, belief, outrage or other strong feeling... I tend to work quickly and intensely. I have never felt bound to having a single, successful style. For me, the style of a painting reflects my need to communicate the concerns I feel at that time. Why paint yourself into a corner? Not being bound by a methodology leaves me free to create and try new ideas." ~ Donald Cole

🖼 Born in New York City in 1930, Donald Cole studied engineering at Bucknell University and later earned his MFA in painting from the University of Iowa. As his art career gained momentum in the 1970s amidst the Pop Art and Minimalist movements, Cole built a career that included teaching at Auburn University and Parsons School of Design. After extensive travel through Asia, the Middle East, and Europe in the 90s, Cole settled on Vashon Island, WA where he still lives and works, painting in his studio daily.

Born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in the United States, Samantha Yun Wall investigates migration, belonging, and the construction of self. Working in ink, charcoal, and conté crayon, she creates striking black-and-white compositions in which silhouetted, doubled, and fragmented figures visualize the tensions between visibility and erasure, intimacy and distance. Centering the body as a site of negotiation, her figures face, mirror, and touch - suggesting both connection and division - while probing how identity is shaped through perception, memory, mythology, and inherited histories.

Following extensive travel throughout Asia, the Middle East, and Europe in the the 1990s, Donald Cole’s work absorbed visual influences drawn from architecture, calligraphic scripts, weathered walls, textiles, and landscapes encountered around the world. These experiences expanded his approach to surface and composition, producing paintings that feel both ancient and contemporary, where traces of gesture, pattern, and color accumulate like fragments of memory.
