Join us for a meet and greet with Fulgencio Lazo and Shinzaburo Takeda, Lazo's mentor and one of Oaxaca's most important artists! Meet the artists, view Lazo's new exhibition, and mingle with other guests for an artful evening at the gallery.

🖌 Shinzaburo Takeda is a Japanese-Mexican painter and printmaker. He is considered one of Oaxaca's most important artists. Takeda has lived in Mexico for over fifty years and trained several generations of Mexican artists, including Lazo.

🎨Fulgencio Lazo is an internationally recognized Oaxacan-American artist whose vibrant abstract paintings and sculptures explore cultural identity, migration, memory, and the power of community. This event is in celebration of Lazo's current exhibition, "Iluminando Caminos [Lighting the Way]". View the exhibition and learn more on our website!

"Agua Azul [Blue Water]," depicts kites, buttons, spools of thread, horns, candle-lit lanterns and stylized human faces converging on a swooping path, evoking the parades and community celebrations of Oaxacan cultural life.

🗺 Working between Seattle and his hometown of Oaxaca, Mexico, Lazo’s work reflects a life lived between places. His paintings explore themes of migration and cultural flow, blending of Oaxacan Indigenous artistic traditions, references to textile design and music, and modernist abstraction.

Showing at Portland Art Museum: ArtX Contemporary artist Juan Alonso-Rodríguez is featured in "To Gather Your Leaving: Themes of Diasporic Experiences in the Northwest."

The exhibition, drawn from PAM's Northwest art collection, highlights ocean migrations, including those of the African and Asian diaspora, and those fleeing conflict.

Juan Alonso-Rodríguez is a Cuban-born, self-taught artist whose work is an ongoing exploration of abstraction inspired by landscapes, botanical forms, architecture, and his Caribbean upbringing. Find more of his work at ArtX Contemporary!

On Art by Northwest, Brangien Davis visits ArtX Contemporary artist Perri Lynch Howard in her Twisp, WA studio to learn how she transforms nature sounds into paintings that reveal fragile ecosystems.

Art by Northwest explores the connection between artists and their local environment, revealing how the region’s diverse landscapes shape individual artistic expression. Each episode provides an intimate portrait of the creative process, as artists across Washington reveal the meanings and motivations behind their work. Hosted by longtime Seattle arts journalist Brangien Davis. Season 3 airs on Thursdays on broadcast, the Cascade PBS app and YouTube.

Opening October 1, Fulgencio Lazo's solo exhibition of new paintings and sculptures, 🕯 Iluminando Caminos 🕯 reveals the breadth of his creative practice. His dense, rhythmic compositions use a personal visual language that blends Oaxacan Indigenous traditions, references to textile design and music, and modernist abstraction. At a time when Latine immigrant communities are facing heightened fear and hostility, Lazo responds with an insistence on hope, looking to cultural memory, community, and connection as sources of light.

Visit ArtX Contemporary this week to bask in the beauty of our special feature featuring Caryn Friedlander's work. From oil paintings on canvas, to new works on paper, and plant-dyed textiles, Friedlander’s work evokes the ethereal and shifting properties of water and natural landscapes.

This new selection comes at a particularly exciting moment for Friedlander, whose work is currently featured in 'Decades in the Making: Ten Years of SOLA Awardees' at the Tacoma Art Museum. The exhibition celebrates the creative legacies of ten years of SOLA Award recipients, and follows Friedlander’s receipt of the prestigious SOLA Award from Artist Trust in 2025, recognizing her lifelong commitment to art-making.
