"Standing in Her Power" by Vincent Keele

🎨 Born in California and now based in Washington, Vincent Keele uses bold color, texture, and a sense of rhythm to tell the stories of African Americans. “These paintings explore African American culture through an everyday lens—capturing how we grow up, the places we visit, and the interactions that shape our everyday lives,” says Keele.

🌟 New works from Caryn Friedlander 🌟 September 3 - 26, 2026
Opening Thursday, September 3, 5-8pm (Artist in attendance.)

ArtX Contemporary presents a new selection of paintings by Caryn Friedlander. From oil paintings on canvas, to works on paper, to plant-dyed textiles, Friedlander’s work evokes the ethereal and shifting properties of water.

Born in New York City, Friedlander holds an MFA in painting (1991) and an MA in East Asian art history (1987) from the University of Washington and was awarded a Monbusho Fellowship to study art in Japan - an experience that continues to inform her approach to gesture and space. Now based in Bellingham, WA, Friedlander uses small brushes to build a painting from a multitude of brushstrokes, which slows her work so she has time to observe a painting’s development. In 2025, she was honored with a prestigious SOLA Award by Artist Trust, recognizing her lifelong commitment to art-making.

"A Dollar Short" by Al-Baseer Holly

🎨 Al-Baseer Holly’s dynamic painting practice draws on influences ranging from his childhood in Philadelphia and his life as a rapper and recording artist in Los Angeles to a deep engagement with art history. His current body of work combines photographs of himself, family, and friends, printed on canvas and collaged onto paintings that weave together memory, identity, and lived experience.

Gerardo Peña, also known as Periko the Artist, is profiled by magazine:

"Peña’s colorful, surreal figures capture something less fixed than a likeness, reflecting the restless, ever-changing experience of being. Faces split, features blur, eyes repeat, and emotions pass across the canvas. Like a lenticular image that changes when tilted, his work reveals new facets of a figure the longer you look—and reminds us how many versions of ourselves can exist at once."

"Indigo Water, Indigo Earth, Indigo Sky" by Juan Alonso-Rodríguez

🌊 Juan Alonso-Rodríguez is a Cuban-born, self-taught artist whose transition from music to visual arts coincided with his move to Seattle in 1982. Working in a variety of visual mediums - from acrylic on unprimed canvas, to modeling paste on panel, to cut steel - Alonso-Rodríguez’s work is an ongoing exploration of abstraction inspired by landscapes, botanical forms, architecture, and his Caribbean upbringing. The acrylic works on unprimed canvas in his "Horizon" series offer an expansive look at the world, contemplating the unknown, the possibility, and the awe-inspiring landscape contained in a Horizon.

Eric Chan's highly detailed oil paintings on reclaimed wood center marginalized subjects and q***r perspectives. His artwork embraces an unorthodox combination of traditional Asian, Classical Western, and contemporary American visual elements, creating a kind of dynamic, intersectional folklore of the immigrant experience. Chan was the recipient of the Neddy Award Grand Prize in Painting in 2024, among other honors.

"that day by the sea" by Alan Lau

🐚 Alan Lau is an artist, poet, and community organizer based in Seattle, WA. Lau primarily works on delicate Japanese rice paper, layering sumi ink, watercolor, pastel, and other media to create abstract works with great depth yet surprising lightness. The Chinese calligraphy Lau learned from his grandmother as a child, the patterned abstractions he did in art school in the 1960s, and the traditional sumi painting he studied during the 1970s at the Nanga School in Japan with mentor Nirakushi Toriumi all inform Lau's work. As a result, Lau's style is one inspired by traditional brush painting techniques, but unfettered by strict tradition.
