What makes a place feel like home?

For mosaic artist Barb Flye, the journeys of migrating birds and people share something deeply human: the search for safety, belonging, and hope.

Through carefully shaped glass and porcelain, Barb brings these stories to life, exploring migration, political expression, and the possibility of a better future.

But her work isn't only about serious issues. It's also about beauty, humor, and the joy of creating.

🎨 Meet Barbara Flye in Shifting Horizons, alongside Jacqui Beck and Tara McDermott.

What does it mean to really notice the world around us and ourselves?

In this conversation, featured artist Jacqui Beck reflects on solitude, attention, returning to older paintings, and the way painting can become a way of knowing yourself.

From finding meaning in ordinary things to using Barbie pink when a painting gets too controlled, Jacqui’s work holds both seriousness and humor at once.

See Jacqui Beck’s work currently on view at Columbia City Gallery.

What happens when we begin to see nature not as a resource, but as a partner?

Meet Gabriela Nirino, Third Prize winner in Columbia City Gallery’s 18th Annual Juried Exhibition, Unwavering Hope.

After arriving in Seattle during the pandemic with a small suitcase, Gabriela began working with what she found around her: plants, fibers, and materials gathered from places like the beach.

Her practice grew into a conversation with the materials themselves and a different way of thinking about our relationship with the natural world.

Her works, Dreaming That the Land Flourishes and Muyu. A New Beginning (2), are on view as part of Unwavering Hope through October 4.

Come experience the exhibition at Columbia City Gallery.
