SEMC is proud to partner with the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) and award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay to celebrate the museum's 10th anniversary with a special screening of August 28: A Day in the Life of a People.

The film will be available on the SEMC website on Friday, August 28th under the Professional Education Programs tab.

Created by acclaimed writer and director Ava DuVernay, August 28: A Day in the Life of a People was originally commissioned by NMAAHC in 2016 as part of the museum's grand opening experience. The film explores six pivotal moments in Black history that all occurred on the same date, August 28, illuminating the resilience, struggle, achievement, and transformation that have shaped the African American experience.

As NMAAHC celebrates ten years of preserving and sharing African American history and culture, the museum is bringing this powerful film beyond its walls for a limited series of screenings across the country. Through this special anniversary initiative, communities nationwide are invited to reflect on the stories that connect our past, present, and future.

Congratulations to the 2026 Association of African American Museums Board of Directors, sworn in this week at the annual conference 🎉

We are especially proud of our very own Shakia Gullette Warren, Executive Director of the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia, sworn in as Interim Vice Chair of the board!

She joins Tamar Smithers, Kamila Pritchett, Regina Bain, Dr. Xavier Buck, and Andre Taylor, who is also a Virginian and currently at William & Mary.

AAAM supports African and African American museums nationally and internationally. Having our Black History Museum of Virginia- open Wed thru Sat 10am to 5pm Executive Director helping steer that work means what happens here in Jackson Ward is part of a much larger conversation.
