The Illuminatio Project

The Illuminatio Project A dance theatre project dedicated to producing Antonio Delgado's play, Illuminatio: Yo Soy, a story of self-discovery and self transformation

Illuminatio was originally created by Antonio Delgado in Ciudad Real, Spain in 2004 as a full-length spectacle intended to foster self-discovery and transformation. However, due to the economic crisis in Spain, it was never performed. Amanda Goodwin, a friend of Delgado and Seattle-based choreographer intimately connected to Spain and its unique culture, is collaborating with him to re-imagine thi

s work as a trilogy for Dance Theater. Illuminatio is an allegorical journey through the interior of the human soul in the tradition of the Spanish mystic poets St. John of the Cross or Fray Luis de Leon, who were interested in communicating the intimate processes of spiritual fortification through metaphor. Illuminatio, which means 'illumination' in Latin, revolves around the central metaphor of light and darkness. It is a morality play, similar to Everyman. The plot is simple and the characters are all allegorical figures. An Individual is born from Light, gets lost in Darkness, and eventually finds her way back to the Light. These three actions make up the trilogy into which Illuminatio is divided - “Creation”, “Slavery of the System”, and “Illumination” respectively. The Illuminatio Project is a cross-disciplinary as well as an international collaboration that combines film, dance, music, and theater. As the script juxtaposes the structure of the classical Greek tragedy with the latest technological performance art, so does the choreography mix abstracted movement with classical ballet and traditional Spanish dance.

Inspiration from Jumping Buffalo who spoke at several events at this past weekend's Folk Life Festival in Seattle. Many people spoke who had been at Standing Rock, Jumping Buffalo among them.
"(People ask me) Why can you still keep giving? You cannot change what happened yesterday, but now is the time to look to the future and make a better future for our children."
"In our culture, a singer is a teacher, a keeper of our history, a keeper of our culture, a keeper of our language."
"I feel humble. I am no one. You are the people who are powerful... I am a person for that time but then, when we're done, I am no one again... who can travel two days without food and be humble and work hard and at the end of the day be glad because I did what I came here to do."
"If you have a singer in your family, your family is rich. Hold that singer high above everyone else."
"Those of you that still have your grandmothers, you're lucky."
"We are starting to come around as a people... important to make a stand for Mother Earth. We are in trouble. A lot of people in the world that are on the same level. People are good. There's good people out there."
"Not taking this life for granted. People died. People got r***d. People got taken from their families. And we're still here."
