Competition:
β™ͺ Grand Master Funk is the official title of What the Funk?! An All BIPOC Burlesque Festival. You can opt in or out of this competition.
β™ͺ The Grand Master Funk title includes a $300 cash prize, a sash & crown, and other prizes!
β™ͺ 1st runner up receives a cash prize of $200 and 2nd runner up a cash prize of $100 as well as sashes.
β™ͺ6 minute time limit for your act.

Wanna perform with a LIVE band?
Opening Night show is the place to be!

It's a night of Classic Funk and improvisation as performers take the stage to kick off the weekend of BIPOC Burlesque!

Opening Night and Live Band:
β™ͺ Our Opening Night show features a live band. All acts will be performed to the live band.
β™ͺ In the application you will find a list of songs from the live band. If you are interested in applying to the festival and performing with the live band note that you will have a tech rehearsal with them the day of.
β™ͺ If you are selected you will have an opportunity to communicate with the band through a tech form regarding your act and cues will be created for you to signal the band.
β™ͺ Our objective is to highlight the creativity of improvisational moments in burlesque

2026 is back August 20-22
Application is open now until April 6th!

Accepting burlesque, boylesque, draglesque and drag submissions from Black, Indigenous, and Performers of color. All music for this show must be funk music. Funk is a music genre that originated in African-American communities in the mid-1960s when African-American musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of soul music, jazz, and rhythm and blues.

β™ͺ Funk rock
β™ͺ Psychedelic funk
β™ͺ Boogie
β™ͺ Jazz-funk
β™ͺ Funk jam

If in doubt, send an email to [email protected] with any questions about music before submitting your application.

Application:
β™ͺ Open March 6 - Closes April 6 11:59 PM PST
β™ͺ You may submit up to two acts per application
β™ͺ Each act may be up to 6 minutes long

Application Videos:
β™ͺ Videos must be available online (e.g. YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive).
β™ͺ We WILL NOT log in, enter passwords or download any videos. If you would like to send is a direct link via Google Drive that would be acceptable.
β™ͺ Your application must have video. This video does not need to be professional quality, it could be taken with a cell phone, but please make sure it is a clear video of the act(s) you are submitting to What the Funk?!
β™ͺ A concept video works as well.
What is a concept video:
Can be you talking about the concept of the act you want to create. It should be uploaded to Google, YouTube or Vimeo with a link attached to the Google form. Be sure to cover the costume colors, the song you wish to use, and most importantly a description of the act. Be sure to provide a link to an existing act so we can see how you perform.
