Been working on getting a dog park at the Denny Substation for years. Tonite! 5:30! Public Hearing on Substation Dog Park. 6,000 sf. With COLA's help, and (hopefully) with the support of Seattle Parks and Neighborhood Matching money, Dream Turf could be in our future. (No crumb rubber in that excellent product. Check it out!)

Hello SLU Dog Park supporters,

Wanted to let you know about an opportunity to comment on the Denny Substation design--specifically, the "public benefits". While it does include an off-leash area, the size allocated to it currently is 6,000 square feet. I don't know about you, but for me, this seems way to small to accommodate the 1000+ dogs that are looking forward to playing there. We need some dog-friendly people in attendance who will speak for our dogs!

Here's a link to the project website: http://www.seattle.gov/light/dennysub/substation.asp

Thank you all supporting SLU Dog Park in our quest for a bigger--and well-designed--off leash area!

Today I had the pleasure of meeting Seattle Deputy Mayor Kate Joncas. I told her about my quest for a well designed off-leash area at the Denny Substation. Happy to know that she's the mom of two rescued black labs!

Somebody needs a home.

**ADOPTED!!** SEATTLE, WA: Meet JJ! He is a 13.5 year old German Shepard. He's big, he's beautiful, and he's got a lot of love to give! JJ's past is a bit dismal, but together we can help him have a bright future. And he's already halfway there, now let's help him cross the finish line to his forever home!

Helen wrote, "One of our volunteers from Animal Rescue Families found JJ chained to a tree. She learned from his owner that is where he had spent his entire life, 24/7, all four seasons. Thankfully she convinced his owner to surrender him to her.

My wish for him is to give him the gift of stability and comfort in whatever time he has left. For a German Shepherd, 13.5 years young is extraordinary given his commanding size. He is a handsome large boy indeed! Everywhere he goes, he turns heads in complete awe.

He is very accepting and has a sweet disposition. He has never had the freedom to 'just be a dog' so it's like all things are new to him.

He is not neutered so he cannot be with other intact males. Due to his age and the health risks of such an operation at his age, our vet advised that he not be neutered. At his point in his life, quality of life is priority.

We have observed him being most comfortable with females with lots of tail wags of joy. So perhaps an adult or senior female might be appropriate for JJ. A one dog household is ideal but we are open to seeing what the right fit could be. Definitely no cats.

We realize the challenge in placing a dog of this size and the commitment it takes in adopting a senior dog, but if I can say one thing to potential adopters, when you open your heart and home to a magnificent creature such as JJ, you will be forever changed and blessed with the gift of giving him a good rest of his life. He deserves to know goodness and kindness in his golden years as we as adults would want for ourselves."

Life has just begun for JJ and we are so excited to help him find his forever human! To adopt JJ, please email Helen as soon as possible at [email protected].

Go, JJ, go!

The Mutt Mitt dispenser was ripped off the post. But with the help of Nina and some tie wraps, we have a temporary fix. Contacted Cynthia from Parks, and generous Dave from Scraps about getting a new one.

Love this.

SEATTLE, WA: Back in February we had the best experience during our visit at the Seattle Humane Society. We had contacted them last minute to see if we could drop in while in town and they were more than accommodating. The staff members and volunteers were so welcoming. Their mission is to simply get their animals adopted as soon as possible while still trying to give their "homeless" sweeties the best lives possible while they are waiting for their future forever homes.

Coco, a 10 year old border collie mix, was one of two dogs we met with and posted on shortly after our visit. Sadly, she is still at the shelter patiently waiting for a human to see her for the beauty that she is, old age and all. (The other senior dog, Trina, was quickly adopted by an awesome guy after we posted her, http://on.fb.me/PxiTcp.)

"Coco is a spry, curious, people-loving sweetie. She has silky black fur and she loves to be petted! Coco would be thrilled to have a person or family of her very own. She’s really a fun and silly girl with lots of energy. Coco would be both a great walking and snuggling companion." See our original post on Coco for more about her, http://on.fb.me/1jaK1Zc.

We're not sure what happened and why she hasn't gotten adopted yet. Did we really only have ONE follower in the Seattle area that was able to give a senior dog a home? Doubtful. You may have gotten busy, missed her story, thought someone else would help, or even just forgot. But Coco has not forgotten. Every day she wakes up in her doggy cell she is reminded of her situation. As awesome as the Seattle Humane Society is, she still lives in an indoor/outdoor cage that will not compare to a good home. Coco just wants a cozy floor or couch or bed to call her own. That is all.

If you can change Coco's life, please contact the Seattle Humane: The Humane Society for Seattle/King County adoption department at [email protected] or 425.649.7563.

Remember, as like most shelter's policy, you need to meet Coco and the shelter staff in person before adopting her - this is a normal adoption procedure. These animals need and deserve good people watching out for their best interest.

If all goes as planned we'll have a turf dog park with room for separate small and big dog areas. It will also be a gathering place for the dog-less, who can enjoy the antics of the dogs. Coming to the Denny substation property within a few years.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Dog owners in the city are protesting proposed rules that they say drastically limit where the animals can romp without a leash in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
