In an effort to manifest a peaceful 2025, we offer our final recommendation of the gift guide…Dorfromantik! Based on a highly scientific survey of the two people writing this gift guide, this game is the perfect gift for parents of a new baby! We know, this sounds crazy. So here’s the evidence: 1. It takes 20-30 minutes to play a round (so, excellent for 2 or 3 plays during a single nap time) 2. It’s cozy and cooperative (because nobody needs more intensity in this fragile time), and 3. The game increases in complexity over the course of a campaign by adding tricky new rules and pieces (unlike having a baby, it starts you on Easy Mode!) Disclaimer: No, you don’t have to have a baby to play it, but for us, it will always hold a special place in our hearts because of this particular life phase it carried us through.

2-4 players, cooperative. Takes 15 minutes to learn, then 20-30 minutes per round. One campaign takes a dozen or so rounds – we did it over the course of a few weeks.

The penultimate recommendation for our gift guide is the ever-crowd-pleasing Wavelength! The quintessential party game for people whose favorite part of Codenames was the feverish debate with your teammates. The Wavelength spectrum has two “opposites” on each end (i.e., “spicy” to “mild”). You and your teammates will have to debate exactly where to set the dial between these two extremes when the player says something like, “meatball” or “guacamole.” Be prepared to fight over that dial like your lives depend on it, only to be flabbergasted by the *correct* answer. Perfect for the kind of chill-as-hell game night where it doesn’t matter if someone leaves to make a snack in the middle of a round and has to shout their “contributions” from the next room.

# of players: the more the merrier! Takes 5 minutes to learn, then play as long as you want

Day 5 is another awesome space game: Terraforming Mars! For the person who always does the most on a group project and wishes that would mean they “won.” You and your “teammates” are working to make the planet Mars liveable for humans. You win by “contributing” more than those dodos! Anecdotally, this game is a BIG HIT among med school students at Penn (truly, how do they find the time?!)

2-4 players, takes a while to learn, but the payoff is excellent!

Day 4 brings us to a local favorite by our friends over at - Calico! For the cat-lover/puzzler/quilt-maker in your life! (In our relationship, that person is Julia. And she has played this game over 60 times… by herself. So if that isn’t a vote of confidence, we don’t know what is.) This devilishly complex, satisfyingly puzzly quilting game *can* be played competitively with other people, but is amazingly fun for the solo-player too. Each game will leave you saying, “Just one more!”

1-4 players, takes 15 minutes to learn, 10-60 minutes to play depending on # of players and how indecisive they are…

Day 3 is for the most recent addition to our game shelf… Ransom Notes! For the family that wants to make themselves laugh so hard that they allllmost (but don’t quite) p*e their pants. You have a small cache of fridge poetry magnets and have to use them to convey a message. The judge picks the best (read: most insane) option as the winner. An absolute crowd pleaser for big holiday gatherings that will leave you thinking “ Super Congratulations Smart Brain Self!” (Hey, I’m pretty clever!)

3-6 players, you already know how to play!

Gift Guide Day 2 is for… Carcassone! The perfect gift for someone who is fond of saying, “I’m a visual thinker.” It’s a classic for a reason! You take turns laying down tiles of an imaginary kingdom and “claiming” certain regions for yourself. But don’t be fooled by the relative calmness of the game – your resources are scarcer than you think and you can really paint yourself into some tight corners (see slide 2). A great game for couples, plus, kids can get into the fun with “My First Carcassone” when they’re old enough to not chew on the tiles.

2-6 players. Takes 10 minutes to learn, 20-30 minutes to play.
