Artist Statement | A Poem by the artist
The wrong order

The one on the right,
with asymmetric breasts
and freckled skin like burnt constellations,
was growing
what should never have grown.

The one on the left,
arms always folded tight,
always a step away.

The one in the middle,
with a pear-shaped body
and a small belly that softens her outlines,
listens to the house
giving up on itself.

From right to left,
the frame keeps shifting,
and no one agrees on where it begins.

ArtsWest is thrilled to be co-producing with Seda Iranian Theatre Ensemble to bring you WISH YOU WERE HERE.

Tickets are going fast. Reserve yours at ArtsWest.org

Seda Iranian Theatre Ensemble was founded in 2019 as the first Iranian theatre company in Seattle, USA. They named their ensemble Seda – which means ‘voice’ in Persian – because they believe that every human has a voice, and every voice deserves to be heard. They chose the name Seda as they aim to create an opportunity for refugees and immigrants whose voice cannot be heard. In a world where the powerful majority controls the mainstream media and is the dominating voice, theatre is an incredible place to be seen and heard. Theatre is created out of nothing: all it takes is a viewer and a performer. The stage could be a house, a performance hall, an alley, or an abandoned warehouse. At Seda Theatre, they want to amplify and give voice to the issues and stories of immigrants by creating work on stage and through imagination and art.

'Friendships shape us and become part of our emotional geography.'

Assistant Director and Actor, Azadeh Zanjani, talks about WISH YOU WERE HERE, 'This play has me thinking about the friendships that shape us and become part of our emotional geography. Even when time, distance, and circumstances take us in different directions, the people who knew us before we fully knew ourselves continue to live within us.'
