For one night only, experience internationally acclaimed kamancheh virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor in concert with the VSO.

Instrumental in popularizing Persian music around the world, Kalhor has performed at the world’s leading concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, and toured as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic. In 2017, Kayhan Kalhor won a Grammy Award with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silkroad Ensemble, where he is a founding member.

Composed by Kayhan Kalhor, Silent City is a powerful elegy and meditation on loss, memory, and resilience. Originally performed with the string quartet Brooklyn Rider, Silent City masterfully blends Persian classical modes (dastgah) with the harmonic language of Western chamber music.

Atashgah (Persian: آتشگاه), meaning “Fire Temple,” draws on ancient Zoroastrian symbolism and Persian mystical traditions. In this contemplative work, Kalhor invokes the imagery of sacred fire—a symbol of purification, spiritual illumination, and divine presence in Persian heritage.

With everything that has happened in our homeland, we chose not to hold our Shabe Jomeh gathering last month out of respect for the loss of thousands of our fellow Iranians. These have been difficult times for all of us.
While we continue to care deeply about what is unfolding in Iran, we also recognize how important it is to strengthen our local community ties. Join us this Thursday evening for Shabe Jomeh at Stoup Brewing - Capitol Hill, for a night of community, conversation, and lifting each other back up.

Our hearts go out to the brave people of Iran, who have courageously stood up for their basic human rights in the face of brutal oppression. As we raise global awareness of their cause, it is equally important to pause and reflect on our shared human values and our collective hope for a more just and compassionate future.

Few artists have articulated this shared vision for humanity as profoundly as Johann Sebastian Bach and Omar Khayyam, through their deep explorations of spirituality, science, and the human condition.

We invite you to gather in solidarity with the people of Iran as Constantinople performs Kiya Tabassian’s arrangements of some of the most beautiful spiritual songs and arias by J. S. Bach, placed in dialogue with the poetry of Omar Khayyam—sung in Persian and responding musically and emotionally to Bach’s works, and keep this hope alive in each other’s hearts.

The Seattle Times Must See Classical Concert!
Constantinople: Kiya Tabassian, setar/director; Didem Başar, Kanun; Patrick Graham, percussion; Tanya Laperrière, baroque violin & viola d’amore
Guest artists: Hana Blažíková, soprano; Neva Özgen, kemençe; Michael Angers, theorbo & baroque guitar; Johanna Rose, viola da gamba; Tineke Steenbrink, organ
Even if more than 600 years separates the life of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 -1750) and Omar Khayyam (1048 -1131), these two genius were made to meet each other. Their visions of the world, as a perfect match of mathematics mastery and a super high level of spirituality, bring these two men in a delightful dialogue and traces a clear path to the sublime. In this program Constantinople brings these two artists into a dialogue, where the sacred and spirituality transcend borders. For this new creation Constantinople proposes arrangements of some of the most beautiful spiritual songs and arias of JS Bach in dialogue with poems of Omar Khayyam sung in Persian and responding to Bach’s songs.
