Casey Thurman: Signts unseen, 35mm infrared film photograph

Nostalgia and loneliness are the main themes that influence Casey Thurman’s work. For this collection, Sights Unseen, he has grown fascinated by infrared light, particularly how to isolate it. Infrared light surrounds us everyday, but is invisible to the naked eye. However, by using specific film stocks and pairing them with filters that block all visible light, we can isolate and capture infrared light making the invisible, visible. Casey has always enjoyed wandering overlooked and abandoned Americana landscapes with his 35mm and medium format film cameras; always trying to capture a sense of time, place, and memory. These photographs bring forth an almost alien or abstracted view of these landscapes. Casey focused on capturing recognizable scenes to push the power of abstraction caused by infrared light. Crushed black skies and glowing trees make for eerie compositions that he hope leave you with a sense of nervousness and whimsy.
Born in Southern California, Casey Thurman got his B.F.A. in Illustration from Cal State Fullerton before moving to the Pacific Northwest 10 years ago. Inspired by the lush, new landscapes of Washington State, and his own insatiable appetite for new ways to make images, Casey picked up his family's Canon AE-1 Program and never looked back. Now residing in Tacoma, Washington, Casey spends his free time immersed in film photography. Casey has contributed to Ilford's Photo Magazine, Kodak's Instagram Feed, and Grit City Magazine. He has also delivered talks on his Infrared Trichrome process and occasionally works as an archival photographer for visual artists in his community.
