Meet Tandu the humphead wrasse, the newest resident in The Reef! 💙

Humphead wrasses are an endangered species that live in coral reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Tandu was confiscated from traffickers by authorities in Hong Kong several years ago. Because his original source location couldn’t be confirmed, he couldn’t be returned to the wild. Ocean Park Hong Kong, followed by the Singapore Oceanarium, provided him with a safe home until he came to us in late 2025. 🪸

Tandu is more than just a pretty face—he's part of an important conservation research project to protect his species in the wild! The project, called Saving Face, is focused on photographing humphead wrasses over time to document their facial markings. (Humphead wrasses have unique facial markings, just like we humans have unique fingerprints.) Photographs are uploaded to a database, which authorities can use to determine if a fish was sold without proper permits. 📸

Happy 13th birthday to handsome Hogan! 🦭🎂

Hogan was born at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in 2013 and came to the Seattle Aquarium in 2015, where he joined his dad, Q. This charming guy loves eating ice treats, lounging in a patch of sun and playing peek-a-boo in his playhouse. 🫣

🚨 Help us name our sea otter research drone!

This year, Aquarium scientists began using a small drone to help monitor sea otters on Washington’s outer coast, making us the first known organization in the state to use drones for this purpose. Our researchers hope that this project will (literally) give us a new perspective on otter populations, foraging habits, geographic range and more! 🦦

Just one problem: We still don't have a name for our drone! Comment below with your suggestions and check back next week to see which name wins. 👇👀

Happy World Otter Day! 🦦✨ Today we're celebrating the five fabulous otters in our care: sea otters Ruby, Sekiu and Mishka, and North American river otters Molalla and Zweigle! 💙

Have you ever wondered how to tell the otters in our care apart? Here's a quick guide on how to differentiate between them:

🪣 Mishka has a darker face than Sekiu and Ruby.
🦀 Sekiu has a blonder face than Mishka.
❤️ Ruby also has a blonder face but (being a southern sea otter) is slightly smaller than both Mishka and Sekiu.
🪨 Molalla has a blonder face and a slightly bigger head than Zweigle.
🌭 Zweigle has darker fur on his head and cheeks and has a slightly smaller head than Molalla.

We celebrated Casey's special day with one of his favorite enrichment items: custom ice treats! A true Pacific Northwesterner, Casey was born at the Seaside Aquarium in Seaside, Oregon in 2014 and came to the Seattle Aquarium in 2022. 💙
